Wiggin Street Parent Update

November 5, 2021

Better Together

Families,

We have had an eventful week at Wiggin Street! It all started Monday with the Gambier Village Council decision to grant an exemption from the Gambier Mask order for our school allowing us to operate under a 'Mask Optional' environment. We appreciate everyone's understanding as we ensured operations were in place and sent out communication as quickly as possible.

Our students continue to show respect and celebrate each Friday with cheers in the cafeteria. Our 4th and 5th Grade students traveled to MVNU for the Champions of Character basketball game on Tuesday and had excellent behavior. I observed 2 students helping get ice and paper towel for students that bumped their heads after school yesterday. Today, I saw a 5th grade student pushing a Kindergartener on the swings. This excellent behavior prompted our Pajama Day today!

One other way students can show respect is by sending in videos to thank Veterans for their service. We will have a flag ceremony Tuesday morning and will send out a culminating video in the next parent update.

Please read on to learn about upcoming events and ways that you can help support our school. I appreciate you reading these updates and am happy to share that last week's update had 312 views!

Have a great weekend!

Warmly,

Christy Grandstaff

Rooted in Respect Celebration

Champions of Character

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University generously invited Mount Vernon Elementary School students in grades four and five as well as the Mount Vernon Middle School students to visit their campus and attend the MVNU Cougars vs. Hiram College basketball game.

During half-time, MVNU held a Guinness Book of World Records Event: "World's Largest Game of Heads/Tails", and encouraged all guests to participate to beat the current world record. It was a success!

We are very appreciative of MVNU for providing such a fund day for our students.

Winter Weather

Please remember that students will go outside on days where the temperature with wind chill accounted for is above 20°f. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Coats, hats, and gloves are necessary at this time of the year. Boots are required for playing in the snow. If you need assistance with winter outerwear for your child, please contact our school, and we will happily find warm clothes for them.

Thrive Kids Update

Thrive Kids with Coach Hannah

We are on a roll...literally! This week we worked on a new challenging movement, "the roll up" as we worked to help kids realize that even when something new or challenging is in front of them, they can still choose what mindset they will have. We discussed the importance of recognizing the negative talk in our minds, i.e. "I can't do this", and how that affects our actions. Often what we say in our mind transfers to what we do. We worked on guiding kids to see the new movement, the roll up, and then use a growth mindset to work through it! They all did a great job!

Veterans Day

Sadly, we will not be having a Veterans Day assembly this year, but are happily making other plans to educate our students about the holiday as well as honoring Veterans for their service. We will be having a flag ceremony with our students on the morning of November 9th as a culminating event. This ceremony will be recorded and shared with families in the form of a video. We would love to include videos of students recognizing a Veteran that is or has been in their life. It's as easy as going to this site and recording your student thanking a veteran for their service. If you have difficulty, 1 1/2-2 min. videos can be made on your phone and emailed to cgrandstaff@mvcsd.us.The following are examples of questions that may be answered in the video:

1. How is the student associated to the Veteran?

2. What years did the Veteran serve?

3. Which branch of our U.S. Military is this Veteran a member of?

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place Nov. 10-11. Please be sure you have arranged a conference time with your child's teacher. If you would like to meet with Mrs. Grandstaff, any of the specials (Art, Music, PE) teachers, or with building specialists such as our Social Worker, Speech, Intervention Specialist, Reading Specialists, please contact the office to set up an appointment.

Food for the Hungry

Wiggin Street will be participating in the annual Food for the Hungry drive from November 15-19. Each class will have a collection box. Students can contribute non-perishable food or monetary donations. Once donation boxes and envelopes are collected, all money is "converted" to a "can" count, $1=4 cans. The classroom with the most "cans" donated per student will win a gift card for a delivered Pizza Party (at a date of the teacher's choice).

The student(s) in each school who donates the largest number of "cans" (based on the same calculation) will be offered the opportunity to be on the LIVE broadcast with other schools' winners on the day of the Drive (December 10th) and will receive a good bag.

Lost and Found

With winter weather approaching, we are getting a collection of sweatshirts and jackets. If you are missing items from your child's wardrobe, please remind them to check out our Lost and Found located at the top of the cafeteria steps.

Also, please label all clothing, lunchboxes, water bottles, etc. We will try to get it to the owner before making donations.
