Cambrian School District, November 7, 2019
Student Voice Quilt Displayed
Last school year, former Charter School Director at the Santa Clara County Office of Education (and life-long educator) Khristel Johnson led an on-site field trip at Steindorf STEAM Magnet School in the Cambrian School District, teaching 8th graders about African American history through her personal passion for creating elaborate, museum-quality quilts about that subject matter. Students were awed by her creativity, craftsmanship, and the fascinating stories she shared to complement what students were learning about the Civil Rights Movement.
Ms. Johnson found the detailed thank you letters every student wrote (via GoogleSlide) so moving that she was inspired to create a brand new quilt titled "Student Voices," featuring our students' feedback and learnings from the education she provided. She will add this quilt to the displays she uses in her presentations to educate and inspire others.
Ms. Johnson unveiled the quilt at the board meeting, and former students and their families attended, as well as Steindorf teachers. On the day of the Board Meeting, November 7, the San Jose Mercury News wrote an article about this event. Read about it here. New at CSD: I Led The Pledge!
Good Apple Awards
Luis Ayala and Raul Sanchez-District Office- These two individuals have been invaluable in going the second mile to work in grounds and maintenance at the District Office. Raul worked with the District for 33 years before retiring but continues to fill in whenever the District is short-handed. Luis worked with the District for many years in the grounds department and still makes his services available, though he works for a different district.
Lara Brock & Marissa Hoff: Fammatre-- Lara Brock and Marissa Hoff have again partnered up this year to run the Project Cornerstone Asset Building Champions program at Fammatre. This is a program that involves parent volunteers being trained and prepared to read specially selected children’s books and then lead related activities and discussions in classrooms each month.
Andrew Noll- Steindorf- Andrew Noll is a current Steindorf 6th grader, helped with the Haunted House and loves all things electronic. He jumped into working on the Haunted House and once he knew the plan, he was on the phone to his mom to bring over his electrical sound components to ensure that we achieved the perfect level of spooky.
Nico Cristiani & CJ Brostko- Steindorf- Nico Christiani and CJ Brostko are Steindorf Alumni. They showed up unannounced at the start of our build, not only to help out, but with a vision and plan for the Haunted House. They were crucial in making all the elements of the Haunted House come together.
Alison and Steve Helmke- Steindorf- Alison and Steve Helmke must be recognized by Steindorf for taking on the BBQ and running with it during the Fall Festival. Alison also secured the tower lights, extra tables and the pumpkin donation. Trying to plan food to feed the masses at a giant event is not an easy task, but Alison and Steve stepped up and made it all happen.
Craig Hedlund- Price Middle School- Craig is a parent helper who has volunteered with the Price Track and Field and Cross Country teams for the past six years. Craig is a high school teacher in another district but comes to Price right after his school day ends to support Price’s programs.
Ary Asfari- Price Middle School- For many years now, Ary has been an invaluable partner and volunteer for our Price soccer program. Before the season begins, Ary takes on the responsibility of setting up Price’s soccer field. This year, he also lined Steindorf’s field at Farnham. Often, Ary comes to practices, sets up drills and helps coach the 7th/8th grade girls’ team.
2018-19 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Results for Grades 3-8
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results from the 2018-19 school year were presented by Mr. Linh Nguyen, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
English Language Arts results highlights: 67% of CSD students reached the Standard Met or Standard Exceeded achievement levels compared to 63% of Santa Clara County and 51% of students statewide. Between 2015 & 2019, the overall percentages of CSD students meeting or exceeding standard climbed by 2.48 percentage points in ELA for all students compared to the overall percentages of their county and statewide student counterparts with a 5.03 percentage points climb and a 6.87 percentage points climb, respectively. With the exception of English Learners, all other program student groups met or exceeded standard at higher rates than their county and statewide counterparts on the ELA assessment.
Math results highlights: 64% of CSD students reached the Standard Met or Standard Exceeded achievement levels students compared to 57% of Santa Clara County and 40% of students statewide. Between 2015 and 2019, the overall percentages of CSD students meeting or exceeding standard climbed by 12 percentage points in math for all students. All CSD students met or exceeded standards at higher rates than their County and statewide counterparts in the math assessment. There is substantial achievement gaps between program student groups compared to all students. However, all CSD’s program student groups met or exceeded standard at higher rates than their county and statewide counterparts on the math assessment.
The CAASPP Assessment utilizes computer-based tests and performance tasks that allow students to show what they know and are able to do. It is based on the California state standards for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics and has three components designed to support teaching and learning throughout the year. This is the annual end-of-year state summative assessment for grades 3-8 that helps determine students’ progress toward college and career readiness in English language arts/literacy and math.
2019-20 Local Control Accountability Plan Update for Price Middle School and Sartorette Elementary School
Price Middle School Principal Mrs. Natalie Gioco and Sartorette Elementry School Interim Principal Mrs. Debbie Stein provided an update of their school sites' Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) for the 2019-20 school year. This update included an overview of the CAASPP 2019 student results, goals, actions and services for improving student outcomes according to the eight priorities set by the state in alignment with the District's Local Control Accountability Plans.Please click here to review the LCAP update for Price Middle School.
