Friday Faculty Focus
News and Notes about #BeBCMS-Issue #12- 2018
#ThatsAWrap
You have made it!
Spring break is just hours away. Please take the time to read the focus before you leave as it has lots of important information for when we return.
Thank you for getting Spring MAP completed before break. This will allow us to use the data to our advantage after spring break. While I am proud of our scholars knowing and owning and understanding their data, we still have a tall task ahead. Growth is great..and what we want...without growth we cannot have proficiency.
A huge thank you and shout out to 8th grade team for their AMAZING breakfast this morning and to Ms. Waddell for organzing the "Some BUNNY is special" notes. What a wonderful way to begin our #FocusFriday
Please make sure your lesson designs are completed and turned into the folder before you leave campus today!
Enjoy your break! Take time to rest, relax, and recharge! I am thankful for all the work you do to create the best middle school on the planet and grow our scholars!

Remember our #BeBCMS Moral Imperatives to an ELITE school?
a. Come to School- BE AMAZING- Go Home! Repeat
b. Bell to Bell instruction
c. ALL instruction/teaching will be on grade level and standards based
d. Take a STAND for teaching and learning. Get up!
Teachers:
Focus on the Finish!
We have 7 weeks of elite instruction remaining.
3 critical weeks before GMAS
What are you doing in your classrooms to ensure that ELITE instruction and learning is happening? What are you doing to HOOK scholars and get them excited for what they are going to be doing?
Thank you for your work self - reflecting on your lesson designs. Please continue to use the rubric to guide your planning.
The rubric is here.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/16FNMIEHor32d3TIV_Ra0tqqA9zGwz4MLe81qUcEPaDk/edit?usp=sharing
Focus On:
Creating Hooks (Openings) and Closings that give you the data that you need to ensure mastery
Create SWBAT/Instructional/Learning Targets that align with the DOK of the standard
How are you ensuring MASTERY of the learning targets when scholars leave your classroom ? What types of closing and formatives are you doing?
CRITICAL:
Everything that you are exposing our scholars to is : GRADE LEVEL standards!
There needs to be alignment between your Standard, Learning Target, and the activities (Work Sessions) that you are asking the scholars to do.
DOK 1: Memorize(factual knowledge)
DOK 2: Thinking (procedural knowledge)
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking (strategic knowledge)
DOK 4: NEW Thinking (extended knowledge)
QUICK REVIEW of our instructional strategies 1-4
I need to see evidence of one of these instructional strategies in your classroom lessons when I do a walk through or observation!
1. Instructional Objective: Have it visual, aligned, and reference it
2. Suffix/Root Words/Prefix: Have them visual and accessible. Model use
This will be integrated into ALL ELA and SS classes next year. Stay tuned for information!
3. Gradual Release: I do, we do together, we do collaboratively, you do. How are you using this in your teaching?
4. Types of Text: How are you using both informational text and literary text
ALSO:
1. Collaborative Planning is made up of three buckets:
Lesson Designs
PLCs
Data Analysis / Digging / DUMPing
Learning with Liz times:
7th grade 8:45-9:15
6th grade 11:45-12:15
8th grade 2:15-2:45
Here is our lesson design template: (make a copy first) https://docs.google.com/a/bryan.k12.ga.us/document/d/1YGAYfD7wP-xieqvJk0PXu7CXLgonm7JfSTQAuTpWOKY/edit?usp=sharing
Coming soon.....
Shadow a student day in a different grade level.
Stay tuned for details on how to enter this ELITE learning experiment!
You don't all have to have LIZ RAEBURN HYPE....but is your body language and energy level giving off the "I LOVE BCMS" vibe that helps set and promote the growth mindset in our scholars?
I feel like I could have written this article.....

What I'm Reading.... (The •15)
Culturize, by Jimmy Casas
"Striving for ExExExCellence each day is a lifestyle."
"All successful schools share one key thing in common: a core group of leaders who believe they can change the world and the success of their students and staff start with the expectation of Excellence! They expect the best from others and even more from themselves. They focus on their own personal and professional growth and they set a standard to do the same."
Our scholars deserve the VERY best we have!
I plan to do a ton of reading over Spring Break. I want to finish the The Principled Princial and begin Learner-Centered Innovation. Also, I am in the middle of a great new non-fiction/non-educational book called "Girl, Wash Your Face" and it's basically awesome!
I hope you enjoy your book from our Book Tasting over spring break as well! :)
