Newsletter No. 3 Week 6 Term 1
Tokoroa Intermediate School 09 March 2023
Principal's Pen
It is week 6 and our year is rapidly getting on its way. I have been most impressed with how well our students have settled in to their learning. I have visited all classes and am very happy at how children are engaged.
Our teachers have been monitoring attendance, and it is good to see we are maintaining a 90% average. It makes for very good habits.
Our cricket team participated at WIMs (Waikato Intermediate and Middle schools), thank you to the coach and team who showed amazing skill and sportsmanship.
This year we are all excited because we will be putting on our school production in term 3. Plans are in place and very soon audition for roles will be coming up.
School lunchtime sports will be starting - every lunchtime to find the winning whare and class. The first round will be Touch Rugby, as they prepare for WIMs Touch Rugby.
We had an incident with vaping in our school last week. Vaping seems to be the in thing for our children to want to take risks with. It has become a phenomena we are struggling with as children are sneaking vapes in to school and vaping in our toilets. We have heightened teacher awareness and are monitoring our toilets closely. Just a reminder if a child is caught with a vape/ and or vaping it will be a 3 day stand down; if they are partaking it will be a 2 day and if they are part of the group watching, this may lead to a 1 day stand down. Vaping is not good - often the substance in the vape is unknown, plus they are sharing the sucking of the vape which is also unhygienic in this time of pandemics. We do plan to have a speaker come in and talk with the students.
Traffic Situation at School
We have concern for the safety of all our students as cars are driving in, turning around or parking in the middle of the carpark.
We are requesting parents to organise with their child to be picked up from the gates. Make sure your child knows which gate they will be picked up from. We do not want to shut the gates but will consider it as an option if the situation does not improve.
Strike Action
A reminder that teachers and principals have voted to take industrial action on 16 March. Our school will therefore not be open for instruction.
Unfortunately, the funding for our schools is not enough for us to give us the time we would like to support all of our students to thrive. We need to attract and retain educators by ensuring that teaching is a valued and attractive profession. Our tamariki need a quality education. And we want to give that to them.
Strike is the last thing we wanted to do and the decision was not taken lightly.
We look forward to another great year in 2023 - and together with your support, building the case for better investment in our tamariki.
