Summer Reading partnership with the Washington Park Branch!
Annette Jenkins and I have been partners in crime, for 15 or more years - - teaming up to bring AFPLS programming to Washington High, and vice versa! Due to the summer 2019 AFPLS reading kickoff having taken on our campus this past June, the Washington Branch recorded the highest amount of teen registrants for the summer reading program, out of all branches in AFPLS!!!

95 years in the making!!! BTW is on the move
Among the unique features of BTW's media center, is its extensive archival material chronicling 95 years of school history!! The passion for making sure our history is recorded, got the attention of the powers that be, at the district's CLL building. Pierre Gaither, Keith Glass and I sat down together over the summer to hammer out just what a district wide digitization project might look like, as Keith had already observed much of the work being done here at Washington's in terms of the digitization of our archival artifacts. The board in turn, saw need to extend such digitization to the CLL''s inventory of archives, which as we know encompasses all of APS schools memorabilia, yearbooks, and much more. A high powered scanner has now been requisitioned, and will definitely take the district's archives to the next level - - Glad we were able to shine a light on the need for this!

Media Goals for 2019-2020
1) For the 9 -12 classes I conduct orientation for, each student will complete a KWL Action Plan for Literacy, to be carried out during the school's Literacy Fridays advisory period.
2) Together with the literacy coach, at least 2 classes will be identified to participate in the Accelerated Reader program, trained on the modules / quiz taking, and log minutes read thru Race 2 Read.
3) Improve upon our 2019-2020 school wide participation in Race2Read by 15% over last year.
BTW Team
The district-wide Beanstack / Race2Read reading initiative was officially launched last year. This year, we really want to improve on our participation. The FRI advisory literacy focus is certainly a great fit, for Race2Read to be used in tandem with that block of time students are reading. Let me know if you'd like a brief overview of how to roll out this tool with your advisory, and I'd be glad to swing by your classroom! - -All students will be able to earn prizes by reaching certain benchmarks in the Race 2 Read app, which is available thru MyBackpack. .
