Discipleship Digest
Discipleship Digest (vol. 1, iss. 47)
Have you ever felt out of place at a party or a new workplace or neighborhood? You didn’t know anyone, or you weren’t sure how to behave or what to say. It’s not a great feeling! Imagine being a foreigner among a group known as the Chosen People. It was pretty clear who was “in” and who was “out”. Yet God says, “The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD… them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer.”
A new school year is starting. New faces will be in our hallways and pews. How do we get our eyes upward and outward to see those who need your smile? Can you be brave enough to introduce yourself and tell someone how glad you are that they are there? Practice a few “get-to-know-you” questions. This works even with people you’ve seen before but haven’t really met!
It’s easy to think of your community as “welcoming” when you are already there and connected. But it takes intentional effort to help that new person be a part of things. Your openness, initiative, and kindness could make all the difference in making this “a house of prayer for all peoples.”
