🗳️ Understanding your school property taxes
"Tis the season for ... property tax bills.
Most property owners in our district received their tax bill from either Ada County or Canyon County within the past 10 days.
We had some newcomers call with questions about their school taxes, which we are happy to answer!
I thought you might be curious, too, so I'm sharing the information in this newsletter.
I want to thank the patron who shared their property tax bill (we removed their personally identifiable information) for the past two years, so we could use them as an example.
You will see their bills below.
👀 A Kuna homeowner's story: property value increased; school taxes decreased
A comparison of this homeowner's 2021 and 2022 tax bill tells a story we're hearing from other Kuna School District property owners:
➡️ Their total school taxes (and their whole tax bill) went down despite the increase in assessed value. (This homeowner's assessment grew more than $100,000)
🪣 Local taxes help pay for gaps in state, federal funds
Your tax bill isn't helpful in explaining what your school tax support is paying to support.
You'll see three School 3 tax levies on your bill - Bond, Supplemental (labeled "Supplmnt" on your bill), and Other.
Each is dedicated to a specific use:
- Bond - Bond for Buildings. In Idaho, local taxpayers pay the cost of new school buildings over time like a mortgage. Voters approve this debt.
- Supplement - Levy for Learning or Supplemental Levy. Idaho does not fully fund the cost of education. This two-year levy allows local communities to help fill in the gaps. Our levy pays for classroom supports: textbooks, technology; additional teachers and staff, and safety.
- Other - This helps pay for liability insurance which the district is required to have.
🔎 Learn more about our levies on our website.
For 2022, the three levies combined total $2.05 per $1,000 of taxable value. The graphic below shows a breakdown for each of the three.
📣 Help inform community about our Bond for Buildings
Our board of trustees will ask voters to consider a bond for new schools and improvements to our existing schools. Would you like to help get the word out? Please sign up at this link!
➡️ Expect elementary report cards next Friday
The first trimester report cards will not be available today. We need an additional week as we implement this first report card in our new student information system - PowerSchool.
We appreciate your patience!
