Update from Sugar Land MS - February 17, 2020
Ms. Bedner Named FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalist
We missed a week of getting a newsletter to you, so we are now back on track with another information-filled update for you. First, we are excited that Ms. Blair Bedner, 7th grade science and robotics teacher, was named as a finalist for FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year! Congratulations to her! FBISD will name its Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year at the Teacher of the Year Banquet later this spring.
We are excited that this week brings our fifth grade parents to campus for our Fifth Grade Parent Night this Thursday, and the fifth graders will visit campus the following week. Please read more about that below or on our campus web page. This is always an exciting time!
We are already making plans for next school year, and our fabulous PTO has once again made arrangements for ordering school supplies online. You can read more about school supplies for 2020-21 below or by visiting our campus website.
The City of Sugar Land wants to remind everyone about the closure of Brooks Street at Highway 90 this week. Union Pacific Railroad (UPR) will be closing the railroad crossing at US 90 and Brooks St. on Wednesday, February 19 at 6 a.m. through February 20, at 8:00 pm. The closure is needed to perform maintenance work on the crossing. Traffic will not be allowed over the crossing during the closure. Residents are asked to be mindful of work crews during this time and avoid the area if possible. Visit its.sugarlandtx.gov for more information on Sugar Land travel data.
A few safety reminders:
- Car riders may be dropped off or picked up ONLY in the front circle drive. No drop-offs or pick-ups along Seventh Street or in a parking lot
- No left-hand turns out of any driveway or any parking lot during school zone hours. We are working with the City of Sugar Land to have signage replaced that had been removed during the reconstruction of Seventh Street
- Due to the proximity of City Park to the SLMS property line on the west side of campus, please note that students are subject to school discipline for misbehavior that occurs at the park because the park is within 300 feet of our mutual boundary line. We provide supervision outside in the morning starting at 7:50 AM, but sometime this week we will provide supervision until 4:50 PM outside. Please have your child wait for you at the benches on the car rider line, in the alcove at the main entrance, or at the tables that are in the courtyard near the flagpole

School Supplies for 2020-21
The SLMS PTO wants to make it easy for you to get your child's school supplies for the 2020-21 school year, and they have partnered with Teacher Tailored / SchoolKidz to provide a convenient, cost-effective way to purchase supplies for next year. All of the supplies for your child's grade level are included, based off of our 2020-21 SLMS school supply list, which was created by the teachers. The only items not included are things like PE uniforms and specialty items needed for certain elective classes. PE uniform sales will begin in late July in a separate process. A list of items needed for specialty electives classes will be shared by your child's teacher once school starts. Visit our School Supply Ordering Webpage for all the details. Clothing Donation Bin
If you have already started on your spring cleaning and have some clothing that still has some life left in it, please consider donating them through the use of our Clothing Donation Bin that is in the east parking lot. Our PALS and Teen Leadership students benefit from them, as we get a monthly check from the collection of clothing that is based on the weight of the clothing donated. You would be helping in at least three ways: 1) clearing out your home, 2) helping our PALs and Teen Leadership students, and 3) helping someone else with your still-usable clothing!
Invitation from Austin HS - "World of Science"
Older, But Important Items
Food and Other Deliveries for Students During the School Day
Recently, we have had a significant number of deliveries for students, particularly for lunches, through organizations such as Uber Eats, Grubhub, and Door Dash. Unfortunately, we cannot accept deliveries for students from these and similar companies. Parent drop-offs are fine, but not delivery companies. This is because we cannot verify that the items delivered came from parents. Student-initiated orders, even though they should not have their devices in their possession during the day, will also be turned away.
Additionally, please remember that we cannot accept parent drop-offs of food for group distribution. This for things like pizzas, cupcakes, etc. Parents will only be able to drop off food for their children.
Last, please do not have deliveries of balloons, stuffed animals, or floral arrangements sent to the school. Thank you for your understanding.
Immunization Update from Nurse Lincoln - Sixth Graders
Your child did or will receive the Tdap and the Meningitis vaccines at their 11 year-old check-up. Please provide proof of these immunizations to the clinic when your child gets them. These are the required shots for 7th grade and providing them as soon as you get them will keep your child compliant! You may email it to angela.lincoln@fortbendisd.com, fax it to (281) 327-8745 or drop it off in the clinic. For any other medical concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic at (281) 634-8745.
Yearbooks on Sale! - $40
Yearbooks are on sale for $40. To order, simply visit https://www.balfour.com/student-info?smi=71485. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Childs at Molly.Childs@fortbendisd.com.
Laptop Lending Library
We are pleased to announce the re-launch of our Laptop Lending Library. Students will have the opportunity to check out a touch-screen laptop, with carrying case and charging cable, for two weeks, just they would check out a book. Some paperwork is required to be completed by parents, first, however. Please visit our Laptop Lending Library page or contact Mr. Sinclair, our Librarian or Mrs. Smith, our Library Aide, for more details.
Parent Volunteers
We love parent volunteers! Please renew your annual Criminal History Authorization (CHA) by visiting the district website. These reset on July 1 each year. Then, please join the PTO by visiting their website at www.slmspto.org.
