Based on 7 Steps to Building a Language Rich Classroom
Content Objective
I will demonstrate how to use Total Response Signals in my classroom.
I will demonstrate how to use visuals and vocabulary strategies to build academic vocabulary in my classroom.
Language Objective
I will write using the following stems:
- One Total Response Signal I will try in my classroom is...
- One vocabulary strategy I will try in my classroom is...
Under your tab for Step 4, jot down at least 3 different total response signals you can use in your classroom.
One Total Response Signal I will try in my classroom is...
Vocabulary Strategy
- Sitting in groups, take all of the cards out of the plastic bag and sort the cards into two stacks: words and pictures.
- Place the picture cards face down.
- Spread the vocabulary words out in a neat row across your table.
- We will say each word aloud together.
- The student with the longest first name will select a picture card and respond using this sentence stem: "In this picture I see..."
- The student will then match the picture card to one of the vocabulary words and use the following sentence stem: "I think this picture might match the word... because..."
- After making a match, the student to the right will pick the next picture card.
- Proceed with the same steps until all matches are complete.
Point to the sense that you would use to answer the question.
Turn to your partner and respond using this sentence stem:
"I use my __________ to __________"
How can the use of vocabulary strategies help students build academic language?

- When you are ready to share please stand up.
- The person with the birthday closest to today will share first.
