CMS Receives Blue Ribbon Status
Tech Department Members Attend ALET
This week Aimee Bates, Michael Fowlkes, and Andy Palys attended the ALET Fall Symposium. This is one of ALET's biggest events and featured national speakers, a full sponsor hall, and exceptional opportunities for peer collaboration.
Aimee was also a presenter at the event. Thank you for representing CCS well at this important professional gathering.
Below, Michael takes a trip to virtual reality with Lenovo VR Goggles at the Synergetics booth.
Teachers Getting SMARTer
An Apple a Day
UA at CHS
Dean Chuck Karr from the University of Alabama visited Cullman High School on Tuesday to motivate and recruit CHS students for the University of Alabama Engineering program. Dean Karr is a world renowned engineer who has grown the University of Alabama Engineering Program to one of the most respected programs in America.
Before Dean Karr met with the students, he spoke with Mr. Kyle Morris and shared how impressed he always is with Cullman students. He respectfully acknowledged the fact that CHS produces not only students with high academic success, but also high character.
Dean Karr spoke with students about having a specific vision to work toward. He encouraged students to be great at whatever they chose to do. He shared that hard work is essential to all things. Students were challenged to have a 3-fold plan to find their career path: things that they love, things at which they excel, and things that will provide a solid income.
A portion of Dean Karr's time was devoted to Q&A. He answered many questions about students' future career paths in engineering.
CMS Students Get Real World Experience
Other skills are involved as well. Many of their excursions are just a walk away from CMS. So, students track the distance it takes them to get to and from CMS. They use the compass to practice cardinal directions along the way. They also calculate the percent of time they were on task and/or percent of tasks they completed correctly. They self monitor their behavior and performance through the whole process.
According to Mrs. Tanner, "It is important to these kids...giving back to a community that gives to them. They want so badly to volunteer and show others what they can do instead of being seen for what they can’t. They even pick up trash on the way back to school to keep the community clean. Students also practice social skills while they’re out by having appropriate and respectful conversations with community members."
Their next outing is scheduled for October 5th. They will be helping to organize and hang clothes at Curt's Closet.

Integrating Tech to Enhance Learning
I Think I Can, I think I Can....I Can!
CHS Hosts Band Exhibition
From Socratic Seminar to Online Video Promotion
The Socratic Seminar is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions. Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others.
They then moved on to the use of technology to develop, create and distribute a promotional video for their colony. Each group was assigned one of the original 13 colonies. The goal was to convince viewers to move to their colony.
Learning is powerful when the right tools are in place!
