American Education Week:
We thank our parents for their visit to our school during the week. We appreciate the support you have shown to your children and to our staff. We hope you had an opportunity to see instruction in your child’s classroom. The staff at Lisbon work extremely hard to give a high-quality education to every student.
Lisbon Geography Bee:
Do you know where our third, fourth and fifth graders were on the morning of Wednesday, November 20th? They were on the continent of North America, in the country of the United States, in the state of Maryland, in the county of Howard County, in the city of Woodbine, in the Lisbon Elementary School Lion’s Den watching the Lisbon Elementary School Geography Bee. Competing were 20 fourth and fifth grade contestants who were selected to participate based on their score on a preliminary round administered to all fourth and fifth grade students earlier this year. The winner of our School Bee was Brennan Moody, 5th grader and our second place winner was Gus McMillen, 5th grader. Next, Brennan will take a test in late January to qualify for the State Bee. Congratulations to all of our contestants: Henry Banach, Elijah Brewer, Maryn Brinker, Gabriella Crotser, Caleb Donner, Aubrey Farina, Nora Gonzalez, Raegan Hahn, Melanie Howard, Gavin Hupfer, Amey Kaushik, Remy Kuhn, Kerri Leach, Gus McMillen, Brennan Moody, Harshil Pandya, Finn Petrella, Will Roman, Trinity Rose, and Juliana Roussillon. They should be very proud of their dedication to learning geography.
Grades 3 and 5 CogAT Assessment:
This year, the Howard County Public School System will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to all students in grades 3 and 5. CogAT is an assessment that measures learned reasoning abilities developed through both in-school and out-of-school experiences. CogAT is a nationally norm-referenced ability measure that provides feedback on student performance as compared to students across the country.
The CogAT will help schools and the HCPSS
- better understand students’ cognitive strengths and weaknesses
- properly place students based on their abilities
- gain insight on how to best teach to a student’s “learning style” and promote greater success
All students in Grades 3 and 5 will participate in the testing. The CogAT will be administered as follows: 5th grade on 12/2, 12/3, and 12/4 beginning at 10:45 and 3rd grade on 12/5, 12/6, and 12/9 beginning at 8:45. Students will participate in three batteries – verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal. Each battery takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
No special preparation is required. Please send your child to school ready to learn, as you do daily.
CogAT is often used as one data point to identity students for participation in gifted education programs. It also conforms with requirements outlined in COMAR Gifted and Talented Education. Individual student scores will be reported to parents in late February/early March.
Please contact Lauren Bauer (lauren_bauer@hcpss.org or 410-313-5506) if you have any questions about your child’s involvement with the CogAT assessment.
Student/Parent Conferences are next week
From Monday, November 25th through Wednesday, November 27th teachers will conduct Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences. Teachers generally schedule conferences on Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. If teachers offer conferences in the evening on both Monday and Tuesday, they are not required to work on Wednesday. Some teachers may schedule conferences on Wednesday. Please be on time for conferences to be respectful of the conference before or after your conference time. If a conference needs to be extended please arrange an additional time to meet before the time your conference is to end. Conferences are 20 minutes in length. It is so crucial that every parent schedule a conference.
Help Wanted: The Book Fair is Almost Here!
The Book Fair will be here at school for parents and students to browse and purchase books right after Thanksgiving. Specifically, it will open during school hours from December 2nd through December 12th, and will also be open for parents to shop before and after our Winter Concerts on December 4th (Strings concert) and December 12th (Band, Chorus and Handbell concert). We are looking for volunteers who have completed volunteer training to help our primary students create their book wish lists during the week of December 2nd. 5 to 6 volunteers for each primary specials class are needed.
Please email Mrs. Hastings at slhastings@hcpss.org if you can help, or sign up online through are Sign Up Genius link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4eacae2aab9-lisbon3

This means we will be assembling and giving 200 Thanksgiving baskets to families in our community! Everyone is welcome to attend tonight; this is a true community event. Contact cathydatz@yahoo.com with questions. THANK YOU for all of your support!
FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT – 12/13/19
Bring a blanket and snuggle up to watch "Toy Story 4" during the PTA sponsored Family Movie Night on Friday, December 13th from 7-8:30pm in the Cafeteria. This is a FREE event. No need to RSVP and a ticket is not required for admittance. Just show up! Doors will open at 6:30pm. Complimentary popcorn will be served; please bring your own drinks. Adults may bring folding camp chairs, but please keep chairs on the outer perimeters of the cafeteria. If you have any questions, please email June Roach at June.Roach@Yahoo.com.
COLLECTIONS
We are collecting coats, hats, gloves and boots through November 22nd for Local and HCPSS children and adults. New or like new condition please. They can also be brought to Community Night.
At Movie Night on December 13th we will be collecting for Homewood School’s Recycled Treasures. Homewood is HCPSS special needs school in Ellicott City. The school does not have its own PTA and relies on the community and other PTAs for support. Each holiday season they have a "store" where students who have earned "cash" credits shop for their loved ones. The items are then wrapped for them by volunteers. All items are donated to Homewood. Last year Lisbon ES delivered a minivan full of items and we hope to surpass it this year! All good condition items are accepted; examples: purses, stuffed animals (MOST POPULAR), beauty products (unopened), housewares, clothes, toys, etc. We will send out more information as the event get closer. Homewood does not have a PTA and relies on the community and other PTAs for support. More information about Homewood is here:
