The Aborigines were the first to inhabit the area. It is also believed they gave the district a wide berth during the past century and a half for the fear of the spirit of Mulka.
The name Mulka comes from an Aboriginal legend associated with the cave. Mulka was the illegal son of a women who fell in love with a man whom marriage was forbidden.
Wave Rock's rounded shape was caused by weathering and water erosion that undercut the base that left a rounded overhang.
