School Board Recognition
Lake Shore Public Schools is joining 537 local and 56 intermediate school districts across Michigan to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month. Serving as a link between the community and classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools, making prudent decisions on behalf of our stakeholders.
“Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one of the very small ways to express appreciation for all they do. This community is blessed to be represented by Board members, also members of this community, life-long Shorians, that have no personal agendas, just dedicated to providing our staff and students with nothing but the best. We couldn’t be more fortunate.” said Superintendent Dr. DiPonio.
The Board includes President Kurt Ziegler, Vice President Susan DeLong, Secretary Elizabeth Munger, Treasurer Amy Thomas-August, and Trustees Kenneth Gulock, Wendy Tobias, and Amber Hildebrand.
Join us to celebrate these extraordinary leaders who work tirelessly for kids at our next board meeting scheduled on Monday, January 22nd at 6:30pm inside our NEW LOCATION:
North Shore Administrative Center
23055 Masonic Blvd.
St Clair Shores, MI 48082
School board members connect essential pieces of the puzzle, bringing together the vision, expertise and passion needed to support public education. Your leadership, guidance and decision-making are crucial in shaping the future of our students and providing them with the best opportunities to learn and grow.
We appreciate the countless hours you devote to understanding complex educational issues, collaborating with stakeholders and making tough decisions. Thank you for being the driving force behind our educational system and for connecting the essential pieces that shape the future of our students and our community!
No matter what challenges lie ahead for our district in 2024, our school board members will continue to govern to improve student achievement and provide exceptional education for all our community’s children.

Education Benefits Form
Families need to submit an Education Benefits Form no later than February 1st, 2024 to qualify for the Summer EBT benefits.
Lake Shore Public Schools is still seeking to obtain completed Eligibility Benefits Forms from all families; It is important to receive these applications in order to attain the maximum amount of federal assistance for other programs (outside of free meals) that greatly benefit our students and families such as school funding, technology funding, SAT, ACT, and AP test discounts, college application discounts, athletics, grants, and instructional support programs.
The state of Michigan will be pulling lists of the Free/Reduced students, from the statewide school database, that is populated through the information that is collected by food service from EBFs. This will give families a Summer EBT card (Bridge card) that will have funds loaded on it to be used toward food/groceries. It is critical that any family that has not filled out the Education Benefit Form this year, do so, so they will receive these benefits. Forms need to be filled out one per family, per district. Hard copies can be picked up and returned to and from school offices.

PRUDENCE
People with the character strength of prudence plan for the future and achieve their goals by making careful everyday choices.
PERSEVERANCE
People with the character strength of perseverance complete what they start despite obstacles. They never give up.
One of the most influential African American leaders of all time is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” Dr. King made his mark by preaching nonviolent means of protesting segregation in the United States. He never gave up.
Senior Maddy Vanderhoff from North Lake High School has been named Macomb County School-to-Work Transition Student of the Year. We are excited to share this success story provided by New Horizons Employment Services featuring Maddy:
Initially, Maddy was a little shy when first working with New Horizons Employment Specialist Sandy Stone. After some time, her vibrant personality shined through along with her unique and artistic abilities! She eventually began sharing her ideas and desires for what she wanted to do in the future. Maddy struggled academically, but took the initiative to ask for assistance, advocating her needs, and was very receptive to the advice Sandy gave her.
During this time, Maddy recognized that the traditional school setting was not a good fit for her, so she transferred to NLHS during the last half of her Senior year, where students are provided with the education tailored to their needs. This opportunity allowed Maddy to work at her own pace, feel valued, improve her social skills and confidence, which in turn gave Maddy the availability to work her part-time position, all while maintaining her studies to graduate on time.
She credits Mr. May and Ms. Pearl for always knowing what to say and for their helpfulness. "I have been told I wouldn't graduate from several people," she said. "But North Lake's quiet environment and flexible hours has given me the right opportunity." She proudly shared that she will be graduating early in January 2024.
Throughout the 4 years, Maddy had exhibited excellent work skills, determination, self-advocacy, and social skills through her participation in working with New Horizons' programs. Congratulations to Maddy and on behalf of Lake Shore Public Schools, we know your hard work will continue to pay off. She never gave up.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Social Intelligence (1/22-26) and Forgiveness (1/29-2/2).
Inspiration
MLK Projects
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the famous American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equality for people of all colors. Although few kids question a day off from school, some may wonder why there's an entire holiday devoted to one man.
This is why teachers at Masonic Heights Elementary took the time to talk with their students about dreams and the importance of caring about people. Here are a few of their class projects that were inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
In Mrs. Reno's class, 3rd graders were asked to share a dream for the world just like MLK. Tevin Fields and Maci Scheuer explained #OtherPeopleMatter goals like "end homelessness so people don't have to freeze outside" and "end world hunger." Maci happily took a photo with two of our favorite Food Service staff.
In Mrs. Habrowski's class, 1st graders colored different pieces of a mosaic as they learned about his love and fight for equality while Mrs. Russo's Kindergarteners drew pictures using the theme how-to be a good friend.
These world-changers are examples of the kinds of students we are proud to serve at Lake Shore Public Schools.
Michigan Wins
Michigan knocks down Washington 34-13 in the College Football championship, their first national title since 1997!
Lake Shore fans celebrated the win by wearing maize and blue, but one staff member in particular was filled with more joy than the rest. Science teacher Mr. Taylor's youngest son Jonathan is a member of the University of Michigan's marching band and as a result entertained at NRG Stadium in Houston last night while 72,808 people watched.
Taylor's 24.5 years of experience as an educator at Lake Shore Public Schools has given him the opportunity to witness hard working students, but nothing can be as special as seeing the dedication of your own child. Jonathan not only plays the trumpet and is part of the 400 members of the marching band, but he will also earn his bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering in December 2024.
Mr. Taylor is a proud father. He explained, "My son was chosen as part of the 275 marching band members able to perform yesterday. He's devoted and disciplined. It is good to be a Wolverine."
Under the direction of Drs. Pasquale and Frey, the Michigan Marching Band strives to create a relevant presence in today’s modern world. Using new technologies, innovative show concepts, and a willingness to take risks, the band continues to make headlines and set trends.
Here's a clip of University of Michigan Marching Band wowing at 2024 Rose Bowl Parade: https://youtu.be/KFrnmEkPHrg?si=eLKxxaRQ-kK9CgTG
And there is nothing more exciting than performing with a national title on the line. Our own Lake Shore Marching Band continues to make us proud each and every day: https://www.facebook.com/LakeShoreBands/posts/365752835790759.
Let It Snow
In Ms. Wolenski's STEAM class at Violet Elementary, Mrs. Lynch's 4th grade students made paper snowflakes.
Snowflakes have long been revered across cultures, mainly symbolizing uniqueness. While a snowfall might appear as a uniform white blanket from afar, a closer inspection reveals the distinctiveness of each flake. This mirrors the uniqueness each of us holds, reminding us of our individual beauty and worth.
Wolenski shared, "When students embark on the process of making paper snowflakes, they are required to analyze geometric shapes and patterns. The act of folding and cutting paper involves mathematical concepts such as symmetry and angles. Additionally, students gain practical experience with engineering principles as they design and execute intricate cuts. Finally, who doesn't love getting to express their ideas and design without limitations?"
Aliylah Cagley laughed at herself as, in the process of cutting, it ripped. Tape was a proper solution to that problem and she will use that same tool to hang it in her room at home. She said, "I love snow and have fun making snow angels with it."
We suppose she cannot make snow angels with the paper ones, but they are as beautiful as the wintry scenes from snowfall.
And remember...
Over the years, the first snowfall has created some beautiful wintry scenes at Lake Shore Public Schools. Snow will be here on a regular basis before we know it and you may be wondering about our procedures for school cancellations.
Decisions made to cancel school due to inclement weather are a reality as we approach the winter season. Student drivers and parent chauffeurs, please drive slow in these slick conditions and leave early so that you have plenty of time to arrive before school begins.
In extreme conditions, we make every attempt to inform our community as soon as possible of a school closing. Communication will be deployed using SchoolMessenger, the district website, Facebook, X, and local media outlets to keep you informed.
Now that we feel the frigid air and see snow falling, please remember to bundle up because baby, it's cold outside.
Innovation
Kindergarten Nostalgia
Small memories cover large parts of our hearts and every end is a new beginning.
Over the holiday break, construction and renovations began as Kindergarten classrooms 100 and 101 were demolished at Rodgers Elementary.
Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Pillars taught for 21 years in room 101. Twenty one years of not just learning the ABCs and 123s, but about building a love for learning.
As she visited her classroom one last time on the morning of December 26th, she couldn't help being not just nostalgic, but emotional. She loved sharing stories of the transition from half day to full day Kindergarten, how her siblings also spent their initial year of school inside that room in 1999 and 2007, and how students in her own Kindergarten classroom saw Mrs. Pillars reach major milestones in her personal life including her marriage and the birth of her 3 children.
Mrs. Pillars desired to become a Kindergarten teacher early on and that dream became a reality. She said, "The best part is being that welcoming door to school forever. It is so cool to watch kids grow, head to the middle school, become an adult, and live in the same community."
Mrs. Pillars is a master of managing a classroom full of energetic and easily distracted 5-year olds while meeting the state and school standards for learning. But more importantly, she is an expert of relationship-building, centering love and trust as non-negotiables. These characteristics are evident in her hallway hugs and meaningful classroom discussions, but also recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year and 100.3 WNIC's Teacher of the Week.
Current Rodgers staff members reminisced about their time spent in these classrooms, too. Julie Pillars (1983), Luke Warrick (2001), Craig Lipscomb (1974), Mary Agrusa (1991), Taylor Brosnan (1997), Shannon Snarski (1986), Deb Rempala (1999) and Alli Teipel (1999) learned cognitive, emotional, and social skills to help them explore their environments and better understand the world around them.
Demolition began in the office area. While it's important to cherish and reflect on positive memories, it's also crucial to acknowledge that life is a mix of positive and challenging experiences. Striking a balance and learning from both types of memories can contribute to a more resilient and well-rounded outlook on life.
District Professional Development
It was a Professional Development Day for staff. Learning is essential to our growth and an indispensable tool for the Shorian Nation.
We continue to sharpen our saws in Professional Development sessions to transform how we educate our students and change what our classrooms look like so that our students are operating at the optimal level of engagement and achievement.
Our teachers continue to facilitate transformational learning experiences for Lake Shore students through modeling workshops and project based learning trainings. The workshops provide learning experiences that connect priority standards and curriculum work to transformation goals, show what transformation looks like in our classrooms, provide a format for how to plan and execute transformative learning experiences, and reflect on both the process and outcome.
MICI/MOCI teachers completed AAC Core Vocabulary training with Jaimie Fons, Assistive Technology Consultant with the Macomb Intermediate School District. The goal was for every student to successfully communicate wherever they are and with whomever they need/choose. Our staff learned and practiced strategies while critiquing and getting feedback.
We spotted our elementary teachers learn more about Multi-Tired Systems of Supports for Behavior, a framework that helps Lake Shore organize and leverage our resources to meet the needs of students. Staff discussed our high-quality, schoolwide academic, social, emotional, and behavioral programming and supports and shared how our data is used to address students' needs.
These are just two examples of the menu of opportunities such as MTSS Behavior, Mystery Science, Educators Handbook, i-Ready, and more!
Our community can expect high-quality instruction in a safe environment and supported by Lake Shore teachers in which high, clear expectations and positive relationships are fostered and active learning is promoted.
MMSTC Scientific Research Presentations
We are appreciative of Lake Shore's Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center connection.
At the MMSTC, Samiul Miah and Adelia Nasier, our 2 Lake Shore seniors, delivered a 15-20 minute scientific research presentation this week on a topic of interest from the biology, physics, or chemistry fields.
Samuil Miah and research partner Matvey Pukalo (Cousino High School) researched the ideal gravity force to optimize radish growth and radish growth length. This research could serve to improve methods of plant growth and a general prediction of how plant seeds grow in extraterrestrial conditions. Adelia Nasir and research partner Khushleen Kherha (Sterling Heights High School) compared sodium chloride and beet juice to determine a more effective anti-icing agent through calculating the freezing point of depression. Their research focused on cost-effective methods of breaking ice down on road surfaces with a focus on more environmentally friendly methods to solve this problem.
We visited Adelia to watch her Chemistry presentation, perfectly timed for today's need for salt on the roads. Adelia shared, "I enjoyed the trials portion of this research project. We had 60, 30 per solution, which were 10 minutes each. That's 10 hours in total, but worth it to discover that salt alone worked the best."
Her partnership with Khushleen is special. She described her friend as someone who "keeps me going" and "brings out the best in me". Khushleen responded, "Adelia's work speaks for itself. Her positive energy rubs off on me." Sounds like it couldn't have been a better match for such an important project.
Because of the caliber of their research, several MMSTC students will present their findings to the community at the "People's Choice" Science Symposium on Tuesday, January 30th at 6pm at the Butcher Community Center.
Lake Shore currently has 15 MMSTC students spanning grades 9-12.
The MMSTC is an advanced science, mathematics and technology center that aims to present students with an accelerated curriculum that is both challenging and engaging.

Color Guard and Band
Color Guard is to interpret the music that our marching band is playing by synchronizing flags and through dance.
As a member of the 12-person team, doubled in her second year, Abby Smith loves it. "It's a family setting and everyone has gotten so close.", she said. She enjoys the tradition, before every performance, of standing in a circle with her teammates, giving pep talks, and dropping flags together.
Right now, they use songs like Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Old Time Rock and Roll, Good Riddance, and Mr. Brightside to create beautiful movement. This Winter, the goal is to compete in 4-5 competitions.
Abby has been dancing since she was 4 years old at Rhythm N Jump Dance Academy. Abby's dance background in ballet, jazz, and lyrical has helped her perform, but prior experience isn't necessary. "If you are passionate and willing to keep practicing, you are welcome to join us."
Everyone needs encouragement and their Color Guard coach provides that. "Coach Mia Chessar is #1. She looks out for the team and makes sure everyone can come to practice, working around our schedules."
We enjoyed watching this team from Lake Shore High School perform at Homecoming and Fall Music Fest. Keep working hard, Color Guard!

Masonic Heights' Spelling Bee
With correct spelling of words like wisdom and responsibility fifth grader Julian Anderson was announced the champion of Masonic Heights Elementary’s Spelling Bee.
Mrs. Crippen, Ms. Knipstein, Mrs. Legato, along with supportive parents, worked tirelessly to help participants practice for this competition. During the competition, they were allowed to have a word repeated, used in a sentence, or defined. There were 30 spellers, in total, but there could only be one winner: Julian. Runner ups were Selena Pupa and Brooklyn Taylor. Regardless of rank, we are proud of every contestant who tried to put their nerves aside to spell as many words as they could.
Congratulations! Julian will be moving on to the Macomb Regional Spelling Bee. Parents Charles Carter and Julia Johnson are so proud of his study habits. Tears in their eyes was evidence that this competition win meant a lot to all of them.
