PTO Newsletter - Volume 138 - December 4, 2015

Message from the President

Happy Friday!!

HUGE thank you to Jenny McIntyre (Lizzie - K) and the folks at Boeing for hosting such a fantastic launch party at their offices last night. If you missed it, I would say you missed the largest group of STM families and faculty coming together in a celebration outside of the school. It was something to behold. Although everyone was greatly disappointed that we were unable to see the rocket launch, it was truly a wonderful evening. Say a prayer for a safe and successful launch today.

Today is the final day to inform me (via the Google doc. spreadsheet - see link below) about your information being added to the student directory. No reply = a YES with the info the school has on file. At this point, going back to check the list won't be helpful - as I needed to start from scratch because a parent (I'm sure with good intentions) attempted to alphabetize my list of 196 families, but instead copied the same last name into all fields (!!) Rest assured that if you did submit your name, I have made note of it on the school's master list.

Breakfast with Santa is December 5th!

Breakfast with Santa this Saturday - We Need Your Help!

Volunteers Needed:

We're still in need of volunteers to make this event a success! We need volunteers to support the Little Elves Holiday Shop, the craft tables, raffle table, and photos with Santa. Please use the link below to sign up to volunteer at this wonderful school event! This fun, festive event wouldn't be possible without volunteers like you!

Raffle Baskets Requested:

We are also still in need of a few more themed raffle baskets (such as legos, art projects, frozen, or sports). This is always an exciting part of Breakfast with Santa and the kids count down until the tickets are drawn (you do not need to be present to win). Please consider donating a raffle basket, gift card, or other item. Contact us at to coordinate.

Thanks again for you support! We're really looking forward to a great Breakfast with Santa this year, with lots of great activities - photos with Santa, shopping for Mom and Dad in the Little Elves Holiday Shop, lots of crafts and games, and a new holiday story time with some of our favorite teachers! We hope you can join us! Use the following link to print out the registration form and return to the office.

Registration for the Winter Enrichment session will take place December 1 – December 7. New this session, we will be offering classes on Lego robotics, art, aviation, improv comedy, and drama, in addition to student favorites like cooking, science, dance, and chess. Wondering About the Status of the STM Student/Family Directory??

We are just about ready to start formatting the student directory! Thank you to all of the families who added their info to the google document. It caused some confusion, as people were looking for their names rather than adding their names, but I think that in the end, we've gotten permission from just about all of our STM community. As I stated in the newsletter on Monday, if you do not reply at all, that will count as a YES! If you still want to specify whether your info is added, please click on the google doc link below and add your name.

Click on this link and fill in the information requested (Last Name, First Name, Add to Directory, Do Not add to Directory).

Directory information will be listed as shown here:

Thank you. With any luck, we will have an online directory before 2016.

It’s time…to make a difference

The Combined Federal Campaign (“CFC”) is in full swing, and right now is the perfect time to designate St. Thomas More Cathedral School as your charity of choice. St. Thomas More Cathedral School is a tax deductible 501(3)C organization and is a participant in the CFC for Federal employees.

The CFC is a Donor-Designated Campaign - By designating the CFC five-digit code of the charity of your choice, you ensure that your donation goes to meet the needs that you feel are most important. Simply designate the organization of your choice where indicated on your pledge form by entering STM’s five-digit code (58640) and the amount you wish to pledge!

How to Donate – Most Federal employees donate by making a regular payroll deduction. Links to the Combined Federal Campaign can be found on most agencies’ intranet or other internal communication mediums. Payroll deductions can also be established using Employee Express Please designate 58640 (St. Thomas More Cathedral School) if you would like to make a donation through regular payroll deduction.

Universal Giving – Beginning in 2014, donors may make a pledge to any charity that is not listed in your local CFC charity list. What that means is that Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Friends, and STM Alumni that live and work for the Federal Government outside the Washington Metropolitan Area can designate STM as their charity of choice. Be sure to contact anyone you know that is looking for a worthy cause and tell them to select 58640 on their CFC pledge form.

For information about the CFC, including details on the public accountability standards for participating charities and more, visit the CFC Home Page at .

Girl Scout Toy Drive

Most children have a Christmas list ready to go! Sadly, some kids may not receive any presents. Girl Scout Troop 2102 is organizing a toy drive to help those kids. Please consider donating a new, unwrapped gift for ages group of 2-12. Some ideas: board games, basketball, football, puzzles, books or toys. Please turn them in by December 11 to one of the boxes outside the office, outside the gym and in the cafeteria. Thank you!

STM Cares - Coat Drive

STM is once again conducting a winter coat drive. As the weather is getting colder and we are pulling our warmer clothes out of the closet, please consider donating any extra coats, gloves, hats, scarves or boots that may no longer fit or you no longer wear. The donations will go to those in need in our community. We would be thrilled to accept your donations through Tuesday, December 8. Donations should be brought to Room 8, Mrs. Meehan's room. If you have any questions, please e-mail Mrs. Meehan at Thank you in advance!

DONATE to the "Race to Space"

Funds will continue to be raised through December 31st.

Volunteer Hours

The STM-PTO requests each family to volunteer 20 hours per school year in a wide variety of activities. We know some families are not able to do so and we offer an alternate of paying $300 for the school year instead. Each family is responsible for submitting their hours in the electronic Volunteer Service Hour Log Book via the STM webpage, or by clicking the button below.

In order to be a volunteer within the school (pizza lunch, classroom helper, room parent) or for roles such as scout leader, sports coach, field trip chaperone, etc., you must be VIRTUS Trained. All hopeful volunteers must attend a "Protecting God's Children" session, and then fill out the appropriate background check/paperwork - available via the STM School office. Once the office has record of your session attendance, and the paperwork has been received, you are granted the ability to volunteer in the school. Family-based events (such as the International Festival, Breakfast with Santa and Hot Dog Bash) do not require Virtus Trained volunteers, as the children's parents are onsite. Questions?
