Visual Thinking in Art, Design, Architecture, & Engineering
Goals for Our Professional Development Time Today:
-Develop introductory skills in visual journaling for use within this project and others.
-Develop content knowledge and fluency regarding architecture.
-Develop artistic processes that support learning in and through the arts.
-Make connections between emergent teacher generated curriculum and current district curriculum objectives.
How are we going to meet these goals?
-We will be engaging in visual journaling so that we can keep a visual and technical record of the components that interest us the most. We will gain an introduction to this process.
-We will transfer and combine ideas and activities we already have in place from our STEAM is Elementary curriculum with practices in the newly purchased text Architecture is Elementary (which should arrive to your school soon). We then be taking all of those learnings and integrating them in the hands-on architecture pop-up book. This will engage us in project-based learning.
-We will look at ways students can present their ideas, gain feedback from others, and finally critically analyze their own work and the work of others.

General Architectural Resources
-The best tool for engaging with architectural concepts, basic architectural engineering, and visual thinking through architecture. Check out the book Architecture is Elementary. You can access the free preview here.
-The Architecture Week's Great Buildings Collection: Over a thousand usable images and excellent reference site for significant architects/architecture including photographic images, architectural drawings, integrated maps, timelines, 3D building models, bibliographies, links for the world's most significant structures.
-A to Z Architecture for Kids: A great collection of resources from Carolyn Brooks and her presentation at the National Art Education Association conference a few years ago. Too many contents to list, but some other lessons are identified for scaling and building lessons for all grade levels.
-Frank Gehry in Pop-Up. This book was one of our resources shared in class and is a great motivator for this project.
-Want to build a broader awareness of some of the most influential architects? This book is the one to have to build your content knowledge, check out 50 Architects You Should Know.
-The Architecture Pack: A Unique, Three-dimensional Tour of Architecture Over the Centuries : what architects do, how they do it, and the great buildings they have given us around the world. It is a bit expensive, but again one of the most inspiring architectural teaching resources you might ever use.
-A solid guide regarding significant architecture of Minnesota: A Guide to the Architecture of Minnesota.
-Architecture Minnesota is a great bi-monthly magazine with coverage of design-rich cultural events and activities, visits to architecture studios, architectural travel photography, in-depth conversations with Minnesota movers and shakers, and, of course, beautifully illustrated feature articles on the latest notable buildings designed by AIA Minnesota member architects. There is always a current issue free digital preview and you might be able to attain a free subscription when mentioning educational intent.
-Free online courses in architecture made available through MIT Open Courseware: Made available freely for your own learning on the topics you choose.
-Great quotes about architecture and the lessons it shares from Frank Lloyd Wright (who happens to have had his chief draftsman, John Howe live and retire in this area of Lakeville/Burnsville).

What the participants felt they received:
-A way to think about art and integrate it more into the units or things we do in STEAM.
-Great ideas!!
-Several strategies for teaching art through STEAM.
-Learned a good way to introduce and facilitate observation lessons for students
-Great modeling on the part of Jeremy.
-A great lesson on architecture!
-A lot of information on architecture, I found out that there are free resources available at Perpich, and I learned how to make a project that I will use.
-Art philosophies and some hands on ideas to use in my classroom that extended current knowledge AND that were completely new!
-I got ideas to engage students in a conversation about what they are thinking about art. I liked the idea of the Visual Thinking Strategies. It has given me many ideas for my units.
Key Findings & Next Steps... From the Participants
-Time to think about how to implement these into my classroom.
-Time to process and figure out ways to integrate this content and processes into practical lessons to use with students.
-More practice on the architecture.
-Practice on doing VTS in a way that is meaningful for my students.
-You'd come back and give us some more specific ideas of projects we can do with the EIE kits that we are assigned to teach. Specifically the Lighten Up, Sound, Playdough, Simple Machines units.
-More time to cover additional transferable strategies.
-Time to review and connect these strategies into other curriculum.
-More time in the year to do another workshop for a variety of grades.
-I hope another few classes! This was a wonderful introduction to architecture and I want to see more on other subjects.
