Bandroom Update

February 2016 Edition

Directors Comments

February is an exciting, but busy month for music students. We begin with the Region 8AA Instrumental Solo/Ensemble contest on February 3, continue with our Music Listening Team advances to the championship round on February 5, we then host the Concordia College Band on February 6, we lift up and celebrate the accomplishment of our SRRHS Concert Choir on February 11 during their performance at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Mid-Winter Clinic, we host the now annual "Pep Band Bash" on February 19 at the final Boys Basketball game and we finish February with our Trimester 2 Band Concert on Monday, February 29.

Students in band are some of the most active, involved and focused students at SRRHS. The goal of this Bandroom Update is to inform students and parents so that details are clear, timelines are communicated and everyone has the information needed to plan ahead for success in all they do.

Last month, over 500 "hits" were made on the January Bandroom Update. Thank you for taking the time to read this information, and thank you all so much for your involvement and support of the high school band room.

Region 8AA Solo Ensemble Contest at Sartell HS

On Wednesday, February 3, 45 band students will perform a variety of solo and ensemble events. Students have been working since November to master their performance. This event allows students to earn four levels of recognition. Fair, Good, Excellent and Superior. The criteria has been established by the Minnesota State High School League. Students earning an excellent award will receive a Certificate of Excellence. Students earning a superior award will receive a Certificate and a Medal.

Students perform for certified judges. They have approximately 10 minutes to enter the room, tune, make any changes to chairs/stands and perform. Following the performance, students may receive verbal comments from the judge and they will receive a critique form with their evaluation and final score at the end of the day.

Students will receive their contest certificates and medals at our Band Awards program in May.

MSHSL Listening Contest

The team from SRRHS earned a 2nd place award at the regional contest which allows them to advance to the Championship round on Friday, February 5 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Our team includes Anna Zeleny, Justin Glen and Ben Brinkman. We wish them well and thank them for their dedication to the study of music, composers and music history curriculum that is a part of the Listening Contest. This is our third year of sponsoring a music listening team.

Concordia College Band Tour performance at SRRHS

Saturday, February 6 is the final stop of the 2016 Concordia College Band tour. We are honored to host any college ensemble that recognizes the accomplishments of the students at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. The traditions of Concordia's music program celebrate a history of over 100 years of excellence. We welcome their musicians and our goal is to fill the auditorium with supporters of high quality music.

The schedule for the day is one that parents and students are asked study. Previous communication has requested that SRRHS Concert Band students reserve the afternoon for collaborative opportunities to work together with students and staff from Concordia. Mr. Campbell is personally excited about hosting the Concordia Band because his daughter Emily is a member of the band. Emily is a 2013 graduate of Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. He is also very excited to welcome to our stage former St. Cloud Cathedral school student Sarah Kremer. Sarah will be the featured senior soloist with the band. Her talents on Saxophone are amazing.

Pot Luck dinner sign-up

At this time, we are asking all SRRHS band students to help contribute to the pot luck dinner needs on Saturday, February 6. Many have already signed-up; however, more food is needed. We welcome the 72 students from Concordia plus their director and support staff to this meal. Our band students are encouraged to come and dine with Concordia students. This is a great opportunity to welcome them to our community and allow our students the opportunity to learn about college life.

To sign-up to bring food to the pot luck dinner, please follow the link HERE. Thank you in advance for your support of this event.

Concert Details

The Concert featuring the SRRHS Concert Band and the Concordia College band will begin at 7:00 pm. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public. It is very common at these kinds of events for the traveling college to take a free-will offering to support their expenses of travel. There is no obligation to donate.

The Concordia Band will take the stage at about 7:20 pm and will most likely perform until about 9:00. Their concert program is only a portion of their complete tour music listed in their program. Our celebration of music making will conclude with a collaborative performance by our SRRHS Concert Band and the Concordia Band. It is predicted that we will finish by about 9:20 pm.
