Introduction

In this article you will learn about the different interactive game platforms such as: Arcade, console, PC, mobile and television. Some if the information you will find out about each game platform is the different types of games that can be played on it e.g. Pac man can be played on an arcade game. Another thing you will read about is how the platform games operate, as they have different controllers. How the games are distributed is another thing you will find out about, this means how do you get the game e.g. by download or shop purchase. For each type of gaming platform you will also see a time line of how they have advanced and been developed for improvement from how they were first created. Finally in this article i will be writing the limitations of each gaming platform then compare them together.

Arcade

An arcade game is a coin-operated entertainment machine and is usually in places such as: restaurants, bars, and particularly amusement arcades that the public can play on. It is normally a large plastic or wooden box with a monitor to see and play the game. A picture of an arcade game is shown in the picture to the right.

Most games played on arcade games are video games, pinball machines. Games such as Pac man (shown in picture C), missile defence, gun fight, space invaders and Tank are examples of the games that are played on arcade games.

Most arcade games are operated by a joystick and/or command buttons (as seen in picture A) that the service user playing the game can control the icon and allow them to move and play the game. On games like Pac man this will allow you to move round the screen moving the joystick to dodge the ghosts to avoid dying and to collect the white dots to win the game. Sometimes arcade games can let you get more involved and into the game, some have plastic guns where you can shoot at the screen to kill enemies, this will attract more customers as they will feel like their actually in the game, making them want to come back. You can see this in picture B where the guns are included. Another way the machine attracts customers is that when the game is not being played it switches to attract mode, where it can play music or show clips of the game to make it look fun, engaging and will attract customers.

To get an arcade game you have to buy the whole box/arcade game form a shop or online they cannot be downloaded as arcade games generally are programmed into them. on arcade games you can only play one game to each arcade game you buy, you usally cant get more then one game as they focus on games like pac man or space invaders.

Limitations to a arcade game are:

  • you can only paly one game at a time this could mean the game could get boring after a while as you cant change the games unless you have another arcade game.
  • usally have to pay for each time you want to play the game if you die you have to pay more money.
  • a problem is also thr screen can burn which will stop the game being played as it leaves a permenant mark.

Below shows a time line of how Arcades have progressed through the year with them first being invented to how they have been developed to today.

Console

A console is an electronic device, used in playing computer games that is connected to the TV so it can be displayed on the TV screen and allow you to play the game at home. It is very different to arcade machines as you can get different cartridges or disks to play on the same console unlike the arcade where you can only play one. They are played on a device specially made for game play called a video game console. The player interacts with the game through a controller, a hand-held device with buttons and joysticks or pads. Video and sound are received by the gamer though a television. A console also functions like a PC and is built with some of the same components, such as a central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and random access memory (RAM). In picture C you can see an example of a Nintendo Wii which shows what consoles could look like.

There are many types of consoles but the main ones include: the Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo Wii. There are hundreds of games you can play on a console to date some example of games that are played on the consoles include: Mario bros, call of duty, sonic the hedgehog, Sims and GTA.

There are different controllers for different consoles however they are very similar for example all console games use buttons for use in a game whether it’s to shoot jump or move. Some console controllers even have analogue sticks like the Xbox or PlayStation (shown in picture B). Most recent consoles now have wireless controls like the Xbox 360 and Wii this will make it easier to play games as you will avoid getting tangled in the wires. The Nintendo Wii does not have wires as the console lets you get more involved in the game e.g. you have to point or move the console to control the game, as if you have a Wii sports (a game for the console) you have to swing your arm to hit the ball, as you would if you were actually playing.

For consoles they are distributed by you have to purchase a console to be able to play the game this can either be a shop purchase or an online purchase. However you normally have to by the console, then all the different games separate that you want. Some games are available to be downloaded straight to the console. For an example on an Xbox 360 you can download games using Microsoft points which can be purchased in a shop. This is where you can enter a code into the Xbox which allows you to be able to download the games or even updates for the games.

Limitations to consoles are:

•that some consoles can be quiet pricey as for the console itself it can even be over £400 like the new Xbox one. This can all add up to be very expensive as also you have to buy games to go with the console which are normally around £40 a game.

•Another limitation is that it can cause health and physical problems such as eye strain or RSI due to constant use of wrists, your thumbs and your eyes by staring at the screen.

Below shows a time line of how Consoles have progressed through the year with is showing them first being invented to how they have been developed to today.

PC

Stands for "Personal computer." PCs are are what most of us use on a daily basis for work or personal use. A PC will often include a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to function. Nearlly all PC's will have a internet connection, as well as ports for connecting peripheral devices into the computer, such as digital cameras, printers, scanners, speakers, external hard drives, and other components.

Personal computers also allow us to do a range of things including gaming, write papers, create spreadsheets and track our finances. If a PC is connected to the Internet, it can be used to browse the Web, check e-mail, and download files.

There are many ways to play a game on a computer, these are : you can downlaod games form the internet e.g. insaniquarium. you can also buy CDS to download on to your PC, A popular game for this is the SIms or Champion ship manager. you can also play thosands of games on the web for free, as their is a number of diffrent game sights to go on for example 'www.agame.com'

PC's maily operate through its devices, e.g. its keyboard (mainly the arrow keys are used to move icons around as left will make them move left (the same goes for right ) and the up arrow often makes the game jump. the mouse can also be used as this is mainly used to click diffrent objects on games to activate them, it can also be used for shooting games by clicking the mouse. In some modern day computers you can even use the monitor, as some have touch screen monitors, this will allow you to change your sight in the game or to move around.

seen below is a time line of when PC's were invented to the first PC game and to where we are today with PC's.

Mobile

A mobile phone/hand phone is a device that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. By contrast, a cordless telephone is used only within the short range of a single, private base station.

In addition to telephony, modern mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services such as text messaging, MMS, email, Internet access, short-range wireless communications (infrared, Bluetooth), business applications, gaming and photography. Mobile phones that offer these and more general computing capabilities are referred to as smartphones.

Thier are many diffent ways you can play games on your mobile, this will include: in most modern day phones likt the iphone, will include an 'app store' where you could download on to your phone hundreds of games e.g. angry birds, candy crush and plants vs zombies. it even has the top 200 dowladed so it will show the most popular games. another way you can play games is on some phones their are games already built in to be able to play. for example snake use to be a very popular built in game as well as tetris.

diffrent mobiles operate in diffrent ways, for example most mondern day phones, will operate the game using touch screen which will do most of the comands (like move, shoot and jump by tapping the screen) to move on some games like limo parking for thew iphone, it even allows you to tilt your phone to streer the limo, this gives a more relistic feel in the game. other ways is that the key board allows you to move diffrent icons about by using the numbers or sometimes they include a up and down button to move.

Television

a Television, is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting and receiving moving images that can be monochrome or colored. they can even include sound.

the most common usage of the medium is for broadcast television, which was modeled on the existing radio broadcasting systems developed in the 1920s, and uses high-powered radio-frequency transmitters to broadcast the television signal to individual TV receivers.

The broadcast television system is typically disseminated via radio transmissions on designated channels in the 54–890 MHz frequency band. However signals are now often transmitted with stereo or surround sound in many countries.

A standard television set uses multiple internal electronic circuits, including those for receiving and decoding broadcast signals. A TV may use different technical things such as digital television (DTV) and high-definition television (HDTV) in most modern TV's.

Tv's dont often come with games bulilt into them, however you can play games on your TV as you can buy CD's from stops that you put into your TV that allow you to play on. for example the game catchphrase. you can also connect consoles to them to be able to play games on, for example the xbox 360 or the nintendow wii. a final way you can play games on your PC is that some broadbands like 'sky' will come with sky games which include a few games you can play, however you have to pay for these.

the way these operrate, is if your buying a game to play on the TV you often youse the remote to contorl what ancwer you would like to pick. however when you plug a console in you will often have to use their controlers to operate this.
