From the Principal
Dear Thornhill Families,
I hope you all have had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I would like to appreciate the the PFC for working diligently to fill key positions needed to ensure Thornhill runs smoothly throughout the year. I want to give a special shout out to Rex Crum for taking on the PFC president's position.
Additionally, we have co-Auction Chairs now, Kay Chinn and Kim Olofsen! Thank you both!
Walkathon Chair is Carmen Childs and the date is Saturday, November 3. Thank you Carmen!

The Back to School Donation Drive has begun! Thank you so much to those families who have already participated. Your support helps provide teachers' aides, a PE coach, a librarian and books, music and art instruction, computers, classroom supplies and so much more. This year, the PFC (the Parent Faculty Club) will spend about $1,000 per student, and the Back to School Donation Drive is one of the biggest ways that we raise that much-needed money.
So far, we’ve received just over $27,000 of our $190,000 goal with 17% participation. That’s a great start, but we still have a ways to go this month. Our goal is 100% participation, with each family contributing what they can. By working together, we can achieve our fundraising goals, and give our kids the best Thornhill experience possible. Say Thunderbirds! (a.k.a Picture Day)
Smile! Picture day is coming. We have a new photography company this year (woohoo!), MugsyClicks, who will be coming to capture your child(ren)’s unique personality and charm on Monday, September 10 for 3rd-5th grade and Tuesday, September 11 for TK-2nd grade. MugsyClicks recommends that kids wear a simple shirt without large patterns, words, or graphics. Click on the flyer for more tips and info.
Can't make it? We will have a make-up day... day to be announced! If you can't make the Monday, September 10 date, you may take your picture on Tuesday, September 11.
The "Class Photo" this year will be a composite of the individual pictures of the kids and teacher and will be available for purchase after the make-up day.
Ordering information will be emailed to parents from the photographer. There are no pre-orders. Everything will be done online after the picture is taken. We believe you will have several shots to choose from!
Going Once, Going Twice!
We’re having our first Auction Committee Meeting on Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00pm. (Co-chair Kim Olofsen is hosting at her home.) Come on over, have a glass of wine/beer/juice box and find out more about volunteering for this wickedly fun event. Do you specialize in marketing? Ad sales? Graphic Design? Party planning? Decorations? Donation solicitation? The Kiki Challenge? We need it all! Please RSVP via Konstella! (Adults only please)

Recycle Your Markers!
I’m excited to tell you about a very special program I’m coordinating at our school in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy! Thornhill Elementary teachers and students will be collecting dried markers, dry-erase markers and highlighters to be recycled. ALL MARKER BRANDS WILL BE ACCEPTED! Please deposit any dried markers into one of the three ColorCycle collection boxes located in the teacher workroom, outside of AT and in the lobby across from the cafeteria.
Once a month, these markers will be shipped to a facility to where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals all while keeping tons of plastic out of landfills each year. As a parent, you can also help support our sustainability efforts by sending your kids to school with any used markers you may have around the house!
Remember, don’t throw out that used marker—ColorCycle it!

The Thornhill Parent Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.
