What are we Learning?
I am sending home a Reading Log for your child's homework this week. Please read 15-20 minutes each night with your child and record what they've read. They can then select 3 of those books to write about/share their understanding of the book. It can be 2-3 sentences. Their Reading Logs are due back on Friday. Unfortunately, our library is not open yet, if your child needs books from school please let me know.
Spelling - This year, Spelling will be a little different. We will not have a traditional Pre/Post test each year as the District's grading system for spelling has changed. However, we still feel it is important that 2nd graders practice their spelling. Students will still receive weekly spelling lists that correspond to the skills we are learning in our Fundations Phonics program. They will also be required to complete 3 activities during the week to practice that week's spelling words. They can choose activities from our Spelling Tic Tac Toe packet. Please look for your child's list and packet in Tuesday's Homework folder. Students will be assessed on their ability to apply these spelling patterns to their writing at the end of each quarter. Thus, their quarterly spelling grade can be found in the Writing section of the report card. All homework is due back on Friday.
Writing - We are beginning our Narrative Writing Unit. Students will learn how to pick Small Moments from their lives to write about. They will also practice writing good beginnings.
Math - For our Measurement & Data Unit, students will learn to use the following measuring tools: tape measure, ruler, meter stick, and yard stick. We'll practice measuring objects, ourselves, and things around our room. We will also compare our measurements using addition and subtraction sentences.
Science - What are scientists? Our first unit explores scientist, their job description, and the tools they use.
