Principal’s Message
We are three weeks into our school year and have already accomplished so much! The students completed their MAP tests this week and results will be shared with parents soon. We had our first outdoor Rocket Rally (assembly) and reviewed our SOAR behavior expectations. Red Oak Rockets SOAR by being Safe, taking Ownership, being Accepting, and being Respectful. We discussed what this looks like in various locations around our building. Our school mascot, Rocky the Rocket, also made an appearance!
Today, students participated in bus evacuation drills. They practiced how to safely exit the bus in case of an emergency and reviewed bus behavior expectations.
We have a long weekend. Please take time to relax and enjoy time with your children. We absolutely love spending time with them here at school! There is no school on Monday (Labor Day) or Tuesday (Rosh Hashanah) of next week. We will see the students on Wednesday!
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Bellini
Visitor Proof of Vaccination
As a reminder, all volunteers and visitors are required to mask at all times when inside the building. In addition to masking, Governor's Pritzker's August 26th Executive Order, requiring that all school personnel be vaccinated, applies to any volunteers in our schools as well. If you will be volunteering at school, you must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Please bring your vaccination card on your first visit so we can verify your status in the office. Thank you for supporting our school and for helping to keep our students safe!
Safety Drill Week
Red Oak will be practicing all safety drills the week of September 13th. We are sharing the specific dates of the drills for your information.
Fire Drill 9/13
Students practice exiting the building quickly and safely.
Severe Weather Drill 9/14
Students practice evacuating their classrooms to safer locations in the building including hallways and bathrooms.
Law Enforcement Safety Drill (ALICE) 9/17
Students practice a response to an active threat on campus. District 112 utilizes the Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate (ALICE) Model to address such a threat.
ALICE stands for the actions that are part of the model:
Alert
Lockdown
Inform
Counter
Evacuate
COVID-19 SHIELD Testing Update
COVID-19 saliva testing will start next week. At this time, per Illinois Department of Public Health, Shield & Passport health will test unvaccinated individuals once a week. This may be ramped up to our desired level of twice a week once the school year gets running. Shield is working across Illinois and due to the increased demand statewide, this program is running once per week. We have asked when we will be able to test twice a week and we also asked when we might be able to test vaccinated students. All of that is "in process" they said and we will simply wait for the green light. Like the entire Pandemic experience, we make plans and then, from time to time, we pivot and adapt to the current reality.
We are grateful for the 2,111 families who have opted into weekly COVID-19 testing. There is still time to opt in, please complete the form (English and Spanish).
Orchestra Update
The start of Orchestra is right around the corner! Orchestra is open to all 4th and 5th grade students. This year, we will host 1st year (beginners) and 2nd year (at least one year experience) orchestras. This means, if your child is in 5th grade and did not participate last year, I would love to welcome them to our ensemble as a 1st year player. In lieu of a recruitment night, you can learn more about our orchestra and register using the link for the orchestra website. The orchestra website contains everything you need to know about our program and where to rent an instrument. If you would like to have a conversation with Mr. Rhodes, you can email me at nrhodes@nssd112.org. I look forward to bringing music to you and your child this year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Rhodes
