Benton Weekly Update

Week 7: September 28-October 2, 2020

Autumn Has Arrived!

School is in full swing and parent conferences are just around the corner. Hopefully, all the students have established their school routines and are beginning to feel confident that they know what to do and what is expected of them (and if they don't, please reach out to Ms. Ridgeway or the counselors for support!)

Although it's hard for teachers and students to get to know each other through Zoom, our staff is striving to connect with the students and understand their needs. Typically, we have test scores from the SBAC testing to help us understand a student's academic strengths as well as areas for improvement. But when the Pandemic began last Spring, the SBAC testing was cancelled. Our teachers are now relying on the iReady Test data to help them understand how best to help your child grow academically. To help us know your child better, all students must complete their iReady Tests this week, and put forth their best effort on it. The iReady Test window closes each day at 6pm, so it is vital that students commence their test session before 6pm. This data is critical to inform our instruction and to monitor your child's growth throughout the year. Click here for a flyer on how to help your child be successful on the iReady Test.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

Here's a link to the Week 6 Newsletter with links and information to resources to help if you or your student is feeling overwhelmed.

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Remind your children to turn on their video for Zoom sessions. When the screen is black, and the student doesn't respond, they could be marked absent! Teachers have expressed concern that some students log into Zoom, turn off their video, and then disappear; students should be actively engaged in the lesson and able to respond when the teacher calls their name.

Gustavo Dudamel ~ Conductor & Violinist

This week we are highlighting the Venezuelan-born conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel. The son of a trombonist and a voice teacher, Gustavo Dudamel studied music from an early age with El Sistema, the famous Venezuelan musical education program. Gustavo learned the violin at age ten, and began studying conducting at age 14. In 2009, at the age of 28, he became the Director of the L.A. Philharmonic. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he conducted both the opening and end titles for the official motion picture and soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and at the 2016 Super Bowl he accompanied Coldplay, Chris Martin, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars along with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) which he founded. This Maestro is truly impressive, and you can find out more about him at this link.

Meet Benton's Social Worker!

Hello Benton Students, my name is Ms. Allie! I am your school social worker intern this year.

What is a social worker? A social worker Is someone who wants to make sure you feel your best, and if not, wants to help you to feel your best when a lot is going on.

I'm here to make sure you have someone you can count on to talk to when you're down, upset, or even when you're happy and just want to talk!

I'd love to chat with some of you and hopefully get to know you, so here is a question I would like you to answer: Since school is different this year, how has it made you feel? (click on the link to respond.)
