PTA NEWS FLASH
Indian Knoll Elementary
Letter from the Prinicpal
Hello IKES Firebirds!
Well March is here and spring is rapidly approaching! This is my favorite time of year. There are several exciting opportunities coming that will allow you to become involved in our school. First PTA is hosting a Spring Fling. It will be Friday, May 4 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Be watching for information coming from your child’s teacher and/or room parent. We need volunteers to make this event a success for the children. Also, our PE teachers have planned a tremendous Field Day week beginning May 7 – May 11. We will need volunteers on those days as well.
We begin our Spring Book Fair on March 23 and it ends March 30. PTA is hosting a Cultural Arts Night on Friday, March 23. Every child will have a piece of artwork displayed for you to purchase. Our IKES Chorus will be performing in our cafeteria while the art gallery will be open in the gym. The book fair will be open that evening as well. Please mark your calendar for this important night.
Kindergarten registration will be different this year. Instead of handwriting information on a pile of paper forms in a school office, parents can log in from home to the Registration Gateway via CCSD’s website at www.cherokeek12.net. Through the user-friendly process that takes about 15 to 20 minutes, parents will enter their own identification information, such as emergency contact names and numbers, which will increase accuracy and eliminate redundancy. After entering all their information online into our secure system, parents will be asked to schedule an appointment to bring the legally required documents for enrollment to the school. During this appointment, your records will be verified by the front office, and your child will participate in a brief assessment with a teacher to gauge his or her kindergarten readiness. The Registration Gateway will be open from March 12 through 31 for parents of children who will begin kindergarten in the 2018-19 school year (must be born on or before Sept. 1, 2013), and children who are starting school for the first time but are ready to enter the first grade (must be born on or before Sept. 1, 2012).
We are still hosting a Kindergarten screening on Thursday, March 22 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. and again on Friday, March 23 from 9 – Noon. Please plan to bring your child in to do a short assessment. Kids will also receive their Kindergarten Firebird t-shirt. There will be appointment times available during those hours as well, but you must schedule the appointments through the online system
Thank you, parents, for all you do to support our school. I know you will agree with me that we have the best staff, the best PTA and the best community in all of Cherokee County. We are fortunate to be here working together for OUR children.

For the month of March, we will focus on character education and career guidance.
One way to help your child become a problem solver is to teach this poem from the book Talk and Work It Out by Cheri Meiners.
Talk about the problem. (Point to mouth)
Listen to understand. (Point to ears)
Think of ways to solve it. (Point to head)
Choose the best plan. (Point to palm like writing a plan)
If you or anyone you know is in need of resources please feel free to contact either one of us at: colleen.delosh@cherokee.k12.ga.us or lori.waycaster@cherokee.k12.ga.us.
Lunchroom News
It’s the month of madness – MARCH MADNESS!! The weather is crazy, basketball brackets are in the works, football players are trying out in the Combine to be drafted into the NFL, Baseball Spring Training has begun, and we go to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March 11th! And then you realize… it’s March which means the school year is more than half way over! Y-IKES!!
To lessen the stress of hectic mornings, let your student(s) eat breakfast each morning in the cafeteria for a nominal charge. We serve a healthy hot entrée each day (Monday – Chicken Biscuit, Tuesday – Breakfast Pizza, Wednesday – Sausage Biscuit, Thursday- Pancakes, Waffles or French Toast Sticks, and Friday – Chicken Biscuits) with other entrees served daily such as Reduced Sugar cereals, toast, yogurt and honey buns. Each entrée also comes with fruit or fruit juice and milk. Full pay students only pay $1.50 for breakfast while children on the Reduced Meal Plan pay 30 cents and students on the Free Meal Plan can get breakfast and lunch at no cost. We serve breakfast from 7:00 am to 8:00 am each day.
Students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:
Ø Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
Ø Score Higher on standardized tests
Ø Have better concentration and memory
Ø Be more alert
Ø Maintain a healthy weight
At lunch, the students have enjoyed the addition of our homemade Cucumber/Tomato Salad, Broccoli Salad and chicken noodle soup! As a reminder, you can see the menus by going to the county website, on the Student tile, click on Menus. You can review the menu with your student. The menu includes both Breakfast and Lunch, breakfast is on top with a dotted line between it and the Lunch menu.
Remind your student, we will be serving Green Applesauce for lunch on March 16th, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day! So far in March, we have celebrated Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss Day) with a scrumptious breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham; at lunch we served Red Dish (Strawberries)/Blue Dish (Blueberries) in honor of two of Dr. Seuss’s famous books. We served a fruit parfait at breakfast on March 6th and will serve Breakfast for Lunch on March 7th to celebrate National School Breakfast Week. The Strong4Life team is scheduled to be here on March 13th for a follow-up visit after their big Pep Rally last fall.
We will have fun activities for your students through the remainder of the school year. We hope your March is not too full of Madness!
