WBMS Friday Notes
April 8-12
Reflections from Ms. Perkins
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Next week we will move into our end of the year testing season. This year our 8th graders students will test separately from our 6th and 7th grade students. English and math tests have been spread out and given additional days, but the daily testing time each day has decreased. We will test each day from 8:55 to 11:05. If at all possible, please move any appointments if they fall during a testing day for your student.
Please reassure your students that they have been well prepared throughout the year and Milestones are only a snap shot of the knowledge and growth they have attained. Sometimes students become anxious before standardized testing and believe these tests have the power to make or break their entire futures. All we want is for our students to show their knowledge and shine as brightly as we know they can. Support their success by ensuring solid sleep, protein-filled breakfasts, proper hydration, and positive mental focus, which have all been proven to assist during testing. We are already proud of the academic growth we have witnessed this year!

Relay for Life
WBMS is doing an incredible job creating cancer awareness and raising funds for the American Cancer Society! Among the many fundraising activities in the school are staff “jeans” days, Quizlet Live sessions, morning Bingo, hat day and pajama bottoms day. Our school’s student council is taking orders for t-shirts ($15 each) until April 18th at the following link: http://bit.ly/19webbcure.
We invite all school and community members to join us and purchase a shirt, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. FBLA is partnering with the Alpharetta High School chapter of FBLA to sell luminarias. If you would like to dedicate a bag In Memory of, In Support of, or In Honor of someone who has been touched by cancer, access our team website at: https://tinyurl.com/WebbWayForACure. The cost of the bag is $10 each.
With only four weeks to go before the Relay, many members of our staff and students have become involved in this year’s fundraising event. Please mark your calendar for May 11th from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the North Fulton Relay for Life event here at Webb Bridge Middle School. Come for the afternoon, evening, survivor’s walk, luminaria ceremony, or even just an hour and see why WBMS is proud of their participation in this year’s Relay and their Webb Way for a Cure team!
Child Abuse Prevention Month
Child Abuse Prevention Month gives everyone the opportunity to think about what role they can play in keeping kids safe and families strong every day of the year. Fulton’s school social workers are prepared to assist our community in shining the spotlight on prevention. Fulton school employees will participate in Wear Blue Day on April 12. All employees are asked to wear blue attire in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month and post and submit pictures using #fultongoesblue to raise awareness. Watch our social media feeds to see photos and activities.
Here are the Facts:
Everyone wants to provide and nurture their child in a positive, healthy environment, but sometimes parents need a little support along the way. In a national survey, 94% of parents said they needed help of some kind; 86% said they would be grateful for services, childcare or other support. However, in a separate study, fewer than 20% of parents said they would actually seek help. (Source: Prevent Child Abuse Georgia)
We encourage families to seek additional resources by calling the 1-800-CHILDREN (1-800-244-5373) Helpline to talk to trained professionals who can connect them with supportive programs in their area. In Fulton, parents can also request assistance from school social workers.
Most people think child abuse and neglect is a serious problem and believe that the problem is preventable: 97% of adults have said they would take action on behalf of children, they just don’t know how. Most people are already involved in prevention by mentoring children or parents (70%), donating (80%), or advocating for children and families (77%). Those involved in these activities can help prevent mistreatment of children. Click this link to Request a Training to learn more about prevention.
Prevent Child Abuse Georgia suggests the following ways we can all become involved to help support parents and create great childhoods for children:
- Volunteer for an after-school mentoring program.
- Give a new mom a break by bringing over dinner or offering to babysit.
- Coach a youth sports team to teach kids the value of teamwork—they’ll learn how to trust teammates and themselves.
- Invite friends, neighbors, or colleagues over for a Civic Dinner to talk about ‘Nurturing Communities’. When you sign-up to host you will receive a guide to lead people into meaningful conversations.
- Encourage families you know to call the 1-800-CHILDREN (1-800-244-5373) Helpline to talk to trained professionals who will connect them with supportive programs in their area.
- Go online to use the 1-800-CHILDREN Resource Map, PCAGeorgiaHelpline.org, which contains over 3,000 local and statewide programs designed to assist and support families.
Autism Speaks Walk
April is ALMOST here, and that means its time to “Light it up Blue” and rally our support for autism awareness here in Fulton County. On 28 April, there will be walk in midtown Atlanta- we’d love for you to consider joining the Webb Bridge Builders team. This year, we will be walking with the AHS Raiders team as we show our support through walking and raising funds for autism education, research and advocacy. We need your help spreading the word about this great event!
We will have a brief informational meeting for anyone interested in joining the WBMS team or finding out how you can help on Monday, 25th March at 8:10 am in Jennifer Ward’s room, 819. Questions? Please stop by or email Jennifer at wardjl@fultonschools.org.

FBLA
FBLA held their general meeting today in the media center. Information to apply for the Leadership Team next year was distributed. In addition, members worked to decorate luminaria bags in anticipation of our Relay for Life event on May 11th.
Our AHS FBLA is partnering with our middle-level chapter to assist our Relay for Life team “Webb Way for a Cure” through the selling of luminarias. If you are interested in dedicating a luminaria In Honor of, In Memory of, or In Support of a friend or family member who has been touched by cancer, please access our Relay team’s website at https://tinyurl.com/WebbWayForACure or ask an AHS or WBMS FBLA member for a luminaria form. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
Our final FBLA general meeting will be held on Friday, May 3rd in the Media Center at 7:50 a.m. Our agenda includes the completion of luminaria bag decorations, awards for active members, announcement of our 2019-2010 Leadership Team, and an end-of-year celebration.
