BCS Going Green(er) | February 2015

Turtle Camp

On Friday, January 16, the 4th and 5th grade Co-Curricular Blue Crew and the Go-Greeners lunch bunch ran a turtle camp for the kindergarten and first grade students. All 184 students participated in the leatherback sea turtle-themed camp. The 4th and 5th graders taught about sea turtles, the effect of trash and marine debris on the ocean and its animals, and how students could help. Each kinder and first grade student was given a BCS-themed racer-backpack to show their commitment to reusable bags as part of the NOAA Ocean Guardians grant we are participating in this year.

8th Grade Creek Restoration Project

The BCS 8th graders, working with Ecological Concerns and the City of Los Altos Hills, spent the day on January 15 helping to restore the O'Keefe Property by planting over 40 species of native plants. The work is part of a grant that the city received from the Santa Clara Water District. The 8th graders had a great day-- helping our community, enjoying the sun, and learning from the experts about environmental education and the different jobs available in that field.

4th Grade Habitat Reconstruction

The 4th grade classrooms finished up their first round of visiting Bryne Preserve to help with Acterra's habitat restoration. The students helped plant native grasses and learned about the habitat and why Acterra is working to restore it. They will return to Bryne Preserve in the spring to see what impact their work has had on the preserve and to continue with their environmental stewardship efforts.

Recycle Electronics at BCS

Don't forget that you can help both the environment and BCS by recycling your used electronics. Through Waste Management, the BCS office is able to collect and recycle the following electronics: cell phones, inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, GPS devices, iPods, video games and consoles, DVDs, digital cameras, PDAs, laptops, iPads, Tablets, and eReaders.

We earn cash for these items through Cartridges for Kids so bring your unused electronics to the BCS office!
