A Note from Dr. Hitchman...
As we transition into the month of March, I would like to thank the students, families, and staff who have reached out to me or attended one of the coffee and chat sessions held in February. I understand wearing a mask or not wearing a mask is a deeply personal decision and I respect everyone’s right to make their own choice. When inappropriate posts or messages are made on social media, it damages the foundation we have built on trust and understanding. Bullying of any kind, whether on social media or in-person, has no place at Lightridge and I appreciate you making me aware when issues arise so we can work together to ensure all students and staff feel validated by their individual decision. As we enter a new normal which is like the old normal but is currently somewhat normal, I look forward to continuing communicating with you whether by phone, email, virtual, or in-person.
March typically has the most school days of any month during the school year. March 2022 is no exception. There are 22 days of school which is almost half of the 3rd marking period. I encourage all students to remain focused and committed to their academics during the month of March, especially when daylight saving time begins. Don’t wait until it is too late to ask for help or assistance. As a reminder, our learning labs are open during every study hall for students who would like to meet with a teacher or peer tutor.
March also signifies the beginning of the spring sports season. We anticipate almost 350 student-athletes will be competing for Lightridge this spring. I urge you to please be alert and careful when driving around campus and through the parking lots, especially around the athletic fields. We also have several new drivers who may need reminders from time to time regarding their speed and attention. Thank you for helping us keep our students and staff safe as we transition back to more outdoor activities. Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. I look forward to connecting with you at one of our upcoming events and thank you for continuing to light the way. Take care and thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter.
Please be sure to check out our weekly newsletter from Barrie Sheivert that focuses on all things college and career!

Dietary Supplements - Medicines or Drugs? Safe or Not?
You may see advertisements for products such as Kratom and Phenibut at vape shops, convenient stores or gas stations. Are these products legalized drugs or medications? According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they are categorized as
Dietary Supplements.
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 defined "dietary ingredient" and "new dietary ingredient" as components of dietary supplements. In order for an ingredient of a dietary supplement to be a "dietary ingredient," it must be one or any combination of the following substances:
- a vitamin,
- a mineral,
- an herb or other botanical,
- an amino acid,
- a dietary substance for use by man to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary
- intake (e.g., enzymes or tissues from organs or glands), or
- a concentrate, metabolite, constituent or extract.
The FDA specifies that dietary supplements are not intended to treat, cure, or alleviate the
effects of diseases. These products are not regulated by the FDA, and companies who
manufacture dietary supplements for sale do not require FDA approval. Listed below are some commonly abused dietary supplements and known side effects:
Kratom: Sometimes referred to as “gas station Heroin,” Kratom is has similar effects to a
stimulant when taken in small doses. When taken in large doses, Kratom can have a sedative,
opioid-like effect.
Kratom's side effects: Federally, Kratom is a legal substance; however, it has been banned in
six states: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. According to
the May Clinic, poison control centers in the United States received about 1,800 reports
involving use of kratom from 2011 through 2017, including reports of death. About half of
these exposures resulted in serious negative outcomes such as seizures and high blood
pressure. Other side effects include weight loss, dry mouth, chills, nausea and vomiting, changes in urine, constipation, liver damage, muscle pain, dizziness, drowsiness,
hallucinations, delusion, depression, breathing suppression, coma and death.
Phenibut: Also known as the “happy drug," Phenibut is a central nervous system depressant
marketed as a diet supplement and mood enhancer. Commonly used with alcohol to “bump up the high,” it is also used as an alcohol replacement because it cannot be detected on a
breathalyzer test. In Russia, Phenibut is a prescribed medication used to treat anxiety and
insomnia.
Phenibut's side effects: In small doses, it can cause dizziness, nausea, poor balance, and
fatigue. In large doses, it can cause trouble breathing, unconsciousness, and death.
Tianeptine (AKA Tiana, Zaza Red, Tiana Red): Also marketed as a dietary supplement/mood
enhancer, Tianeptine is an emerging substance being abused for its euphoric properties
similar to opioids and heroin. Alabama recently banned the sale of Tianeptine and classified it as a Schedule II substance. Schedule II substances are drugs with a high potential for abuse that could lead to severe physiological or physical dependence.
Tianeptine's side effects: According to the National Institutes of Health, there are several
published case reports of Tianeptine intoxication and death. An overdose of Tianeptine can
lead to opioid-like effects and lead to respiratory failure and death.
Due to lack of research into the potential harmful effects of these substances, we don't yet
know all of the specific risks associated with them, especially when used in larger amounts.
As a result of this lack of research, these substances remain unregulated, leading young
people to believe they are low risk, thus opening the door for young people to abuse them.

22-23 Distance Learning with LCPS
Distance Learning will continue as an offering for secondary students based on academic preference in the 2022-23 School Year. Distance Learning continues to be a fully synchronous, virtual offering for the whole school year. We invite you to explore details, frequently asked questions, and courses offered to learn about this program serving students in grades 6-12.
- All students interested in Distance Learning (grades 6-12) will need to apply through the web application for enrollment consideration.
- The Distance Learning application portal is open through March 31, 2022.
- This is the only opportunity to request Distance Learning for the 2022-23 school year.
- Secondary students currently participating in Distance Learning who wish to continue with this program for 2022-23 must re-apply for enrollment consideration.
- Current Distance Learning students who wish to return to their home school for 2022-23 will not need to re-enroll at their home school.
- Students currently attending school in person are welcome to apply for Distance Learning enrollment consideration for 2022-23.
- Students who do not apply or who apply and are not accepted for 2022-23 Distance Learning will remain enrolled in their in-person, home school setting.
- All secondary students must complete the course selection process with their home school during the second semester. Students interested in Distance Learning should follow the steps outlined below:
- During the course selection process, students and families must complete a course request for classes for 2022-23 for their home school through StudentVue/ParentVue.
- Courses available for each student will vary based on the classes available at each home school.
- Students should work with their home school counselor to determine their course requests.
- Students applying to Distance Learning should work with their home school counselor to review the courses that are available through Distance Learning, select the desired courses and plan out the pathway to graduation.
- When school counselors review each student’s Distance Learning application, they will enter the desired Distance Learning courses the student will take for the 2022-23 school year into the online application.
- Students who are accepted to Distance Learning will have their course selection requests updated to the Distance Learning courses listed in the student application.
Each student should collaborate with their school counselor and complete the Distance Learning application between the firm dates of February 15, 2022 to March 31, 2022.

Seniors, please pay your $50 senior dues no later than Friday, April 8th. The amount will cover your expenses for senior sunset, graduation rehearsal luncheon, and your graduation ceremony. In addition to the required amount, please consider donating an optional amount to cover the costs of the senior class gift and any unforeseen expenses.
All dues can be paid using the Online Payment Portal. There are separate links for the required amount and the optional donation. Links and QR codes can be found on slides 4 and 5 of the Senior Dues Presentation attached below.
Lightridge High School encourages students to actively engage in volunteer service throughout high school. Students who demonstrate a strong commitment to service, as evidenced by completing 100 or more hours of service by April of their senior year, will earn a service cord to be worn at graduation. Loudoun County Public Schools does not require volunteer service hours for graduation.
In order to qualify for a service cord, students must submit their volunteer hours each year during the eligibility period for each school year. The Lightridge Volunteer Service Form can be completed as many times as needed throughout the academic year to document multiple volunteer activities and service hours. Students may only count volunteer service hours from the summer before 9th grade through April of senior year. Happy volunteering!

Spring Writing SOL
We will be administering the English Writing SOL test to all students taking English 11 or AP Language and Composition as required by The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). The test has two components: a multiple choice response and a short paper response. In order to obtain a score, the student must complete both components.
The Multiple Choice portion of the test will be given on Thursday, March 10th and the Short Paper portion will be given on Friday, March 11th and testing on each of the days will begin at 9:15am. It is important that students attend school on these days so please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would require an absence. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that will result in your student missing a test day, please notify Donna Draisey as soon as possible.
AP Testing
March 11th is the deadline for AP Payment, AP Cancellation and AP Late Registration
Students currently enrolled in an AP Course and planning on taking the corresponding AP Exam, must register for the test through their College Board account at https://apstudents.collegeboard.org. Any exams that are registered for from now until March 11th will be subject to a $40 late fee.
Also, as you may recall, LCPS has agreed to pay for the first 4 AP exams that your student takes, effective this school year. To clarify, if a student is taking 4 AP exams or less this school year, and registered before November 5th, they do not need to pay anything.
Students planning on taking more than 4 AP exams this year, will need to pay $87 per test, for the number of exams over 4 that they are taking. For example, if a student will be taking 6 AP exams, they will need to pay $174 ($87 x 2 tests).
Parents please note that you need to pay for the exams by March 11th. If you are certain that your student will be taking (and is registered for) more than 4 exams and you would like to make a payment at this time, please use the school's online payment portal. If your child attends Academies of Loudoun, and will be taking all of their exams there, you will need to make payment through the Academies of Loudoun payment portal. If they are taking exams at both Lightridge and the Academies, please make all your payments via the Lightridge online payment portal.
I will be sending periodic reminder emails to families who have students taking more than 4 exams and have not paid beginning in January. If you have questions about the number of tests your child may be registered for, reach out to Donna Draisey.
ACCESS for ELLs Testing
ACCESS for ELLs, or the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners test, is a state and federally mandated English language proficiency assessment administered to identified English Learner (EL) students in Kindergarten through grade 12. The assessment helps LCPS monitor the progress of ELs' English language development throughout the school year and from one year to the next.
ACCESS testing will continue for Lightridge students during the month of March. Click here for complete information on ACCESS for ELLs testing.
I will continue to do everything I can to create a stress-free testing atmosphere for all students and to communicate with students and parents regarding testing dates, times and locations. All communication to students comes through E-Hall Pass and their LCPS issued email account so encourage your student(s) to check both of these sources regularly.
Please do not hesitate to contact me via email if you have questions or concerns about any aspect of testing. You can also go to the Lightridge Testing Office website for the latest testing information.
