A Note from Mrs. Nichols
Here are some important reminders for the coming weeks:
- Message from PTO: Sign up to support Teachers for our Fall Staff Appreciation event! Here's the Sign-up Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090E4AA9A82DA5FE3-fall2. Thanks for showing our staff some love this Holiday Season!
- I am excited about all of the opportunities to have families in our building in the coming weeks! Next week is our Holiday Lunch (RSVP, please! Information below!). This meal is for 3rd and 4th families, but 2nd grade families, don't worry! We'll have a Family Meal in the spring for you! *Families who are attending the Holiday Meal, please arrive a little early to get your "Ticket" before getting in the lunch line with your child. You can pre-pay by sending in cash or check to your child's teacher, labeled specifically for the Holiday Meal.
- We are looking for Level 2 Volunteers to help with our classroom Winter Celebrations. Please read below for more information.
- NC Check-ins are coming up for our 3rd and 4th Graders. The Reading NC Check-in will be Monday, November 14th, and the Math NC Check-in will be Tuesday, November 15th. NC Check-ins are a test similar to the format of an EOG, but the tests only measure some of the standards assessed at the end of the year. These assessments give our staff a good idea of where students are at this point in the year. The test is only 90 minutes (maximum) and 25 questions. Students will take this assessment again in the winter. This test is not for a grade; it is only to see how students are doing in relation to some of the standards for their grade level. Students get to review their answers as well as the questions, so it can be a great exercise for students to self-assess as well. *If students miss the NC Check-in, they will have to make it up when they return to school.
- Mark your calendars for our Math Week: December 5th - 9th! Parents will be invited to attend an information session in the morning and play "math games" with your child in the classroom. Our Scholastic Book Fair is also that week, so you can do a little holiday shopping before heading home or back to work!
Have a great week!

Volunteers Needed - Classroom Winter Celebrations
Dear Families:
Each year our PTO provides a nice holiday brunch for our entire staff. In order to all have our meal together, we ask for volunteers to help by having a “winter holiday celebration” in the classroom with students. In order to volunteer, we’re asking that each person is a Level 2 Volunteer.
- We have a list of those who are approved Level 2 volunteers. If you want to check your status, you can email your child’s teacher or our Head Secretary - Ashley.Mendoza@bcsemail.org.
- Singing up to be a level 2 volunteer is simple, but might take a couple of weeks, so please start the process now.
- Being a level 2 volunteer also allows you to chaperone field trips and volunteer in other ways for our school!
- There is no additional in-person training, but we do have a “less-than-10-minutes” video we like for level 2 volunteers to view.
- Here’s information about how to complete your volunteer application, as well a some answers to frequently asked questions.
- If you can't be there in person, you can help in other ways by donating treats or materials for games or crafts!
Please email your child's teacher if you would like to help in your child's classroom for the winter celebration. You’ll work with other parents to come up with activities and prepare treats. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at 8:45 am and stay until 10:30 am.

COVID Updated Protocols
If a student tests positive for COVID (at home or at a healthcare provider), they would isolate for 5 days from when their symptoms began. We will recognize the guidelines established by the CDC and NCDHHS regarding the use of a face covering to be worn for days 6-10 upon return to school.
Our normal exclusionary symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and vomiting are in effect. If a student has a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, they must remain at home until symptoms are resolved for 24 hours.
Hand hygiene, enhanced cleaning protocols, and improved ventilation are all still priorities and important mitigating strategies.
Face coverings remain optional, to be worn by anyone at anytime.
Physical distancing such as 3 ft or 6 ft apart is no longer required.
Contact tracing is not required.
Following the guidelines established by the CDC and NCDHHS, MAHEC will not be providing rapid antigen testing in our schools. Staff and families may order at home tests for free via this link: https://www.covid.gov/tests.
MAHEC will send home further guidance regarding when students need to stay home due to an illness.
For students where an absence is Covid related please indicate this in your parent or health provider's note.
Students/teachers will follow the same guidelines for makeup work as they would for any other illness or injury.
