SHARK SHOUT OUTS
- I'd like to send a shout out and a note of gratitude to some of my colleagues. As a classroom teacher, I know that collaboration with colleagues has made a huge difference for all my students, not just the students who have individualized plans. This is especially true this year. So I'm very grateful as we approach the middle of the year for the work of Taylor Murray, Jen Stevens, Jackie Corrigan, Mimi Vanderberg, Jazmyn Jones, and Diana Evans, all of whom have taken time to help students in my classes to succeed and to help me improve my practice in the classroom with our students. I'd particularly like to recognize the extra work Ms. Evans has undertaken in our U.S. history class, as she has gone far beyond the requirements of her job; I am glad that she plans to take on classroom teaching in the social studies. I'd also like to thank Ms. Caroline Freitas for reaching out to propose collaborating with the Gender Sexuality Alliance to put on an event for LGBTQ adult members of the community. We are extraordinarily fortunate to have such committed, expert and caring educators working with us at MRHS. -Mr. Matt Brown

Letter received from Town of Chatham Dept of Natural Resources
The Monomoy 8th grade sent four teams to compete at the Project Citizen state showcase on May 31. The projects were completed as part of the 8th grade Civics curriculum. Each of the 8 civics classes completed a project and presented before judges and peers in school during the week of May 13-17. Two groups each from Blue and Silver team were chosen to go to Boston. At the state showcase, all four teams won awards. Silver E-block's presentation on Shark Safety (advocating for detection buoys and trauma training) won the Environmental Project award. Blue G-block's presentation on Banning Plastic Straws (which successfully argued for articles at both Chatham and Harwich town meetings) won the Best Hearing Award. Silver B-block's presentation on Plastic Ocean Pollution (which worked with Blue G-block on the Plastic Straw Ban) won the Best Portfolio Award. And Blue E-block's presentation on #EscapeTheVape (pursuing flavored tobacco product sales before the Harwich and Chatham Boards of Health) won the Humanitarian Project Award and the Best Overall Presentation Award. Congratulations to all the students and to Mr. Matheson and Mr. Dickson whose Civics classes completed Project Citizen this year.

Dollars for Scholars
Tuesday, January 14 During Jawsome, Dollars for Scholars will be here presenting to the seniors regarding their scholarship program and the application process.
Thank you
Thank you for all the parents who came to the Junior Planning night and be on the lookout for individual meeting times with students and their guidance counselors.
PSAT Memo to Parents
In order to reach our goal of 100% of students being College/Career ready, MRHS funded PSAT/NMSQT testing for every student in grade 10 & 11. Research demonstrates that students who take the PSAT in grades 10 & 11 give students the best chance for success on the SAT.
Greetings Grade 10 & 11 Parents/Guardians,
Your student took the PSAT assessment in October and the scores have come back for review. The guidance counselors have been in to visit your child’s ELA classroom to help them understand how to interpret their scores.
We were able to accomplish the following: All students have opened a College Board account where they can access their on-line PSAT score report. In addition, we reviewed a sample score report to help students better understand their results. We also returned the original exam books so that students may go back and “retake” the test (now that they have the correct responses). Finally, students were able to connect their College Board account to Kahn Academy for individualized and structured preparation. Data shows that merely ten hours of time in this program should help boost scores by nearly 130 points.
In order for you as parents to support your child’s improvement, I have attached two of the video excerpts that we used in the classroom with your student!
Best Regards,
The School Counseling Team
