Greetings to the Britt Elementary School Community!
Welcome back from Thanksgiving vacation, and welcome to the last three weeks of the first semester. The next three weeks will be very busy, but we must keep our focus on excellent teaching and learning. Britt administrators have observed transforming and personalized learning during classroom observations. For example, Deborah Stringfellow shared with me the fine instruction she observed in Kelly Henderson's classroom a few weeks ago. She shared a summary of that classroom observation as follows:
Ms. Henderson’s math instruction was a model of balanced numeracy. She started with a whole group lesson demonstrating how to use different strategies to solve the same subtraction problem. Students were actively engaged as she modeled the problem solving process through think alouds to ensure they had both procedural and conceptual understanding. They were given time to think about a strategy for finding the difference without subtracting while using a number line. Next, students smoothly transitioned into small groups based on a short formative assessment given prior to the lesson. One group worked on laptops with Thinking Blocks to practice multiplication and division. Another group worked on calendar math which recycled and reviewed previous taught concepts. For instance, the students were creating word problems that equaled the number of days in school. Also, calendar allowed them to review and practice prime and composite numbers, factors, multiples, equivalent fractions, and many more 4th grade standards. Ms. Henderson worked with small groups providing guided instruction. She strategically had each student use a number line to problem solve.
Let me know how I can best support your good work at Britt Elementary School as we all strive together using effective, innovative practices to transform and personalize teaching and learning.
With warmest regards,
