Sound of Sun Prairie Marching Band

FLORIDA Here We Come!

Join Us For A Historic Season!

Hello Sun Prairie Band Families!

This coming school year marks the 50th anniversary of the award-winning Sound of Sun Prairie Marching Band. As you know, we had to cancel our past two seasons of Sound due to the pandemic. However, we've been hard at work planning for our return with the goal of coming back bigger and better than ever!

Please take a moment to read about the events we have planned for next year including our trip to FLORIDA!! Our Fall Marching Week and performance at the home football game is open to ALL band students. This will be a good opportunity to check out what Sound is like!

As always, thank you for your continued support. We hope you are also excited for what promises to be a historic 50th anniversary of this great organization!

Fall Marching Rehearsals & Performance

We would like to invite all band students entering grades 8-12 to join us for five evening rehearsals on Aug 16-20. The rehearsals will take place at Sun Prairie High School East from 5-9 PM each night. We will be preparing for a performance at the first home football game in the new Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium on August 27th!

Who Can Participate?

ALL incoming 8th-12th grade band students are eligible regardless of what instrument they play.

Worried About It Being Too Difficult?

Don't be! The performance will not include much marching and we will have the music ready for you in advance so you can start practicing. We will use our rehearsal time in August to learn more so we look and sound great!

If My Child Participates Does It Mean They Are In Sound?

No, but we will be registering students for Sound earlier this year due to our travel plans to Florida. This opportunity is a fun way to learn more about Sound and get a bit of experience performing.

Will It Be Safe?

YES! We will follow all protocols and guidelines.

What Will We Wear?

All participating students will receive a SOSP t-shirt to wear the night of the performance.

Will This Cost Money?

No! Thanks to the Sun Prairie Summer School Program and the Sun Prairie Band Boosters all of the expenses for the rehearsals and the performance will be covered.

When Will We Receive Music?

PDFs of the music will be shared with participating students in the near future.

What Instrument Should I Play? Will Guard Be Included?

We will not be issuing SOSP instruments for this performance except for marching horns (for the horn players), marching baritone (for euphonium players), contras (for tuba players) and battery (for percussion). Everyone else should plan to play their concert instrument for this event. Students interested in guard will have the opportunity to learn a basic flag routine for this event.

What If I Can't Make It To All Of The Rehearsals Can I Still Participate?

Attendance at all of the evening rehearsals is important in order for us to look and sound good. If a student has a conflict with a rehearsal it will be important to communicate the absence as soon as possible. We will certainly be flexible and find ways to make sure the group and individuals are ready for the performance. Excessive absences or unexcused absences will not allow the student to participate in the performance.

How Do We Sign Up?

To participate in the fall rehearsals and the performance registration is required. Registration is quick and easy and can be done by clicking HERE or the button below.

SOSP 2022 Season & Florida

We are busy preparing for the historic 2022 SOSP 50th Anniversary Season. While we do not have an exact calendar, we DO have a DRAFT calendar that we can share allowing you to get an idea of dates and times. PLEASE realize that this is only a DRAFT so do not put these dates in your calendar!

In general you will notice the following:

December- At some point in December, we will share the show concept for 2022!

January - We will host an "Open Rehearsal" for students to come learn more about Sound and to give it a try!

February - Guard and Percussion weekend rehearsals begin. Drum Major/Leadership Workshops begin. SOSP Registration takes place.

March - SOSP Weekend Rehearsals begin (typically Saturdays for 4 hours)

April - SOSP Weekend Rehearsals continue with a few 4-9 hour rehearsal days.

May - SOSP Weekend Rehearsals continue with two overnight camps and a performance in the Memorial Day Parade.

June - Full-day rehearsals begin June 1. Performances will take place in conjunction with DCI events and community parades.

July - More rehearsals but many performances including a trip to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival Parade/Show followed by our Thank You Show at the Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium. Our season will conclude with a trip to Florida for a performance at Universal Studios or Walt Disney World Resort (tentatively July 11-16).

How Much Will It Cost?

We are still working out numbers with our travel company and will be able to get an estimate soon. Our goal is to keep the price down while creating a life-changing season for your child! We will have a number of fundraising opportunities for families to help earn money reducing the cost of the season/trips.

When Do We Need To Make A Decision About The 2022 Season?

Not until next February. However, we will have a number of fundraising opportunities right when school starts so we would recommend taking advantage of those opportunities even if your child is still unsure.

Parent/Guardian Meeting - August 18 (8 pm)

We will host an in-person Parent/Guardian Meeting on Wednesday, August 18th starting at 8 pm in the Sun Prairie East High School Orchestra Room regarding the Florida Trip and 2022 Sound Season. At this meeting, you will learn more about the Florida Trip, the 2022 Sound Season, Fundraising, and more. It will be a great opportunity to connect to our Band Booster organization and to ask questions! As a bonus, after the meeting, you can go outside to hear your kids finish performing during practice!

What Is The Sound Of Sun Prairie?

The Sound of Sun Prairie is a voluntary, extra-curricular marching band. It is comprised of 8-12th grade students who have an interest in performing with percussion and wind instruments or color guard.

The purpose of the Sound of Sun Prairie is to provide an environment in which students can learn to work cooperatively toward common goals, the power of positive attitudes, personal responsibility, self-motivation, individual sacrifice for the good of the group, and striving to work to the best of one’s ability at all times. It is a student-centered organization that promotes personal growth and student leadership. The band’s philosophy is based on the belief that learning to be successful in marching band involves the same process as learning to be successful in other endeavors and that understanding the process for success is the most important part of attaining success.

SOSP is a member of SoundSport, a division of DCI (Drum Corps International) and it follows their schedule of events. This includes marching and competing in parades and field show competitions throughout the Midwest.

What Is DCI?

For nearly a half century, Drum Corps International, Marching Music’s Major League™, has been the leader in producing events for the world’s most elite and exclusive marching ensembles for student musicians and performers.

Thirteen original founding member organizations formed the Drum Corps International collective in 1971 to organize and unify leadership for youth-focused competitive drum corps events throughout North America. Directors of those competing groups sought to unite their corps by providing opportunities to perform together—in the end building a foundation for future success.

A non-profit entity was officially established in 1972, and today DCI supports numerous programs around the globe while sanctioning participating recognized drum corps, SoundSport® performance ensembles and DrumLine Battle™ teams performing in more than 100 competitive events that make up the annual Drum Corps International Tour.

With a vast reach online at, through corporate sponsorship, annual broadcast initiatives, and outreach to high school music programs, Drum Corps International delivers the message of “excellence in performance and in life” to more than 7.2 million young people, ages 13-22 involved in the performing arts across the United States.
