General News! Week of January 22nd-26th
Marvelous Monday To You All !
On Friday SMS held its annual school spelling bee. The students all did an amazing job! Representing Team 8-2 were: Max Besselman, Carmen Pope, Jerami Sweat, and Reggie Tukes. Congratulations everyone who participated in this event, and especially to our top performers. Our first place champion was Owen Zuschlag, runner up: Josiah Ware, and a tie for third place: Vanessa Codd and Ashli Smith. Owen will have the opportunity to compete at the county level next, and perhaps move on to the state competition!
We also recently held our SMMS Geography Bee. Our 1st place winner was Luna Forgrave, followed by a second place tie between Max Besselman and Joshua Stewart. Congratulations to all!
Thursday After School, will be held on Thursday, January 25th. Parents, each week your child is offered this opportunity. If you feel they should be attending, and are not, or do not come home with a slip, please drop one of us a quick note, and we will make sure they are invited. This is offered in all of our classes weekly, so students who need that little extra help and support, or just want to stay, should take advantage of this opportunity. Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip in order to stay, as well as an indication of how they will be getting home. Pick up is at 3:45. Thank you for being prompt!
Zero Period is a great way to start the day! If your child arrives in time to take advantage of this they are more then welcome to join us. We meet daily from 6:55- 7:25 am. Hope to see you there!
Here is quick note from Dr. McManigal:
School: To Go or Not to Go?
Early in the morning, it is often difficult to make a decision about whether or not your child should stay home from school. With minor symptoms, you often cannot tell whether it is going to get better or worse during the course of the day.
The main reasons for keeping your child home are:
• if they are too sick to be comfortable at school and
• if they might spread a contagious disease to other children.
As a rule of thumb, a child should stay home if there is:
• a fever over 100° F,
• vomiting (especially more than twice),
• diarrhea,
• a very frequent cough,
• persistent pain (ear, stomach, etc.), or
• a widespread rash.
Most of these problems need to be discussed with your child’s health care provider to determine if an office visit is needed.

Language Arts-
This Week in Language Arts:
We have met our main characters in both of the novels we are currently reading, and have already seen them get themselves into some interesting situations. This week we will be identifying key details from our chapters and using them for our summarizing strategies. We will also use evidence from the text to develop key characters in the story. Later in the week we will identify symbols used throughout the story and explain why the author chose them as well as what they represent. Finally, we will analyze some of the more noteworthy quotes from the story and make connections to our own experiences.
Independent Choice Reading book #1 was due today, Monday, Jan. 22nd.Students who are just finishing up a book have until Wednesday to test. I am very pleased to see many students getting into the reading groove. They are showing wonderful results on their quizzes, as well as enjoying a good book! Our next book will be due Feb. 5th.
For Tween Tribune, we are on week #3. I am excited to see many more students getting going on this assignment. Their overall comprehension is improving, and I have seen some great written responses to the "Critical Thinking Question". These activities will definitely increase their ability to be successful on the EOG and in life! Please remember, the only way to increase Lexile levels and improve writing scores is through independent practice.
Just an FYI if you missed this note in previous weeks:
This quarter our TweenTribune assignment, has had a few changes...Students are now being asked to read at least 6 articles each week to earn a total of 18 points for 100% credit.(overall comprehension scores should be 75% or higher) One of the articles will be one I choose and assign. For this article they will also be asked to complete a writing component, by answering the "Critical Thinking Question" located at the bottom of the article. They will still have from Saturday morning until Friday at 3 pm. to complete this assignment. Student who do this regularly generally spend less than 1 hour to complete the entire week's assignment. Students will no longer be able to get full credit for this after the due date has passed,or if the assigned article has not been completed.
Thanks for your continued support from home!

Mr. Frazier
This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will complete Unit 4: Functions. Thus far, the students have learned to identify functions represented by ordered pairs, value tables, graphs and mapping diagrams. Next, we will learn to compare two functions represented in the various forms. In order to do so, the students must have a complete understanding of line slope, or rate of change, which will be our focus this week.
The students will also receive a study guide at the end of this week to complete. These study guides are invaluable to your child’s success. Not only do they provide much needed practice and sample problems, but they serve as a review for the unit test. Please encourage your student to complete the study guide and use it to study for upcoming tests.
