Physical Education Update
October 2017
Finishing up Jump Rope....
Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
This is our priority standard at OES for Physical Education. Under standard 1 are most of the skills that we will be assessing in physical education class in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Goodbye letter from Mr. Fairley...
The jump rope unit has come and gone, but the knowledge and experience that I
gained from teaching this unit will last for a while. It was encouraging to see your
children listening well and doing their best to learn how to jump rope as well as
learn different jump rope tricks. I know a lot of the students said that they practiced
at home as well. I appreciate you taking the time to help your child work on what
they are doing in PE. Much of what we do in PE, must be applied at home in order to
be fully effective. I encourage you to continue to stress the importance of physical
exercise and healthy eating to your child as they continue throughout school. Thank
you again for all your support of Oskaloosa Elementary school.

MILEAGE CLUB TIMELINE
MILEAGE CLUB UPDATE - 3rd, 4th, 5th Grade
# of laps each class
Red - 6
Orange - 7
Yellow - 8 laps
Green - 9 laps
Blue - 10 laps
These dates might change just a bit if we have snow days, but it gives the kids a general idea of when they should be making different clubs to stay on track.
Using mile times for different age levels, we broke down the time and figured out what each grade level should be accomplishing for a kid of that age. THIS IS NOT ASSESSED, just something for the kids to work toward or achieve at a higher level if possible.
3rd grade - should be getting at least 6 laps each class
4th grade - should be getting at least 7 laps each class
5th grade - should be getting at least 8 laps each class
Ask your child what their goal is for the year -- they set it themselves. I am really excited to see the kids reach their goals. This is the first time I have tried goal setting for running. My hope is that kids won't feel the need to compete against each other, because the focus is on a task and personal achievement.
PE STANDARDS....... YOU BET!
Standard 1 contains all of our skill based needs and Standard 4 is labeled as our work habit on the report card. Your child will be assessed in all five standards at some point from K-12th grade.
Each building has it's own priority standards.
Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4: The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Standard 5: The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
