Principal's Message
We had a wonderful first week kick-off to our fall sports season. Spectators are allowed at both soccer and basketball games. There is a $2 charge for adults and a $1 charge for students. Cheer tryouts will be Monday through Thursday this week. Track will begin Tuesday. All students must have a physical in order to participate.
Tigers Serve kicks off this week. More information below. For the month of October we are asking each scholar to perform random acts of kindness! See activities below.
Highlights from last week!
The girls basketball team won 18-17 vs Franklin.
The soccer team won 3-0 vs Franklin.
Element meetings!
Our very own Bella Brownlee showed Chief Smith a random act of kindness and was featured at the beginning of a Channel 6 news report and in the Free Press.
Thank you to Mr. Dobson and Ms. Lewis, our YMCA coordinators for a successful first week of NextUp programming. Thank you parents for your patience and flexibility as there were a few transportation hiccups. Some of the high quality programming our scholars participated in were as follows: Laser Tag, Outdoor Adventure, Chest, Spin Academy, Yoga and Mindfulness, Geared Up, and Edible Schoolyard. Just to name a few.
Tigers Serve
Calling all Tigers! The National Junior Honor Society is kicking off this year's Tigers Serve Challenge with afterschool events this week. On Wed and Thursday Oct 12 and 13th, meet at Room 201 before heading out for some school grounds litter pick-up from 3:30-4:45pm. Arrange for transportation home if you can't ride the activity bus.
But, wait? What is the Tigers Serve Challenge anyway? Tigers Serve is a year-long goal for all Albert Hill scholars to earn 5 hours of community service for our school or wider community. This is how it works: Participate in community service here at Hill or on your own. (Service is anything that you do for others and that takes your time and talent without being paid for in any way.) Then, you log your service events and time served on paper logs that are available in the front office or in Room 201. At the end of the year, turn in your logs to Ms. Howard's mailbox. If you do at least 5 hours of service you will gain a Tigers Serve honor award, which is a certificate and recognition at the end of the year awards assembly. We hope to see you at this week's events!
Special Event- Kwame Alexander and Nikki Giovanni
Each ticket is good for one admission and a signed copy of Kwame's new book "The Door of No Return".
The event has been given a very positive plus by the addition of the author Nikki Giovanni. Both her and Kwame will present together on the stage at Huguenot High School.
Tickets will be given out on a first come first served basis. You may reserve as many tickets as you wish as long as you plan to attend. If you would like tickets, please email me the number of tickets you would like. You or your scholar can pick them up from me on Tuesday.

SCHOOLWIDE TITLE 1 PROGRAM
Title I, Part A provides financial assistance through state educational agencies to school divisions and public schools with high numbers or percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic content and achievement standards.
School divisions target the Title I funds they receive to public schools with the highest percentages of children from low-income families. RPS Title I funded schools are school-wide programs that are designed to upgrade their entire educational programs for all students, particularly the lowest-achieving students.
Please view this schoolwide Title 1 Presentation to learn more! This information can also be found on our school website.
School Attendance
Every Tiger, Every Day! Every Day Counts!
School attendance is vital to scholar academic success at all levels.
The Virginia Department of Education defines “chronic absenteeism” as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason (18 days). Truancy is the act of accruing one or more unexcused absences. Though the definition of absenteeism may differ from truancy, the National Center for School Engagement asserts that the outcomes of a student missing class remain constant regardless of how truancy or absenteeism is classified. Several studies suggest that chronic absences frequently lead to notable academic problems.
Parent/guardians are encouraged to call the school on the day of their child’s absence, but MUST send a written note requesting absences be considered excused upon returning to school. All written notes MUST be submitted to the school within five (5) days of the last absence.
Excused absences are typically those that have resulted from conditions beyond the control of the students or parents/guardians. The only excuses for absences that shall be deemed acceptable for consideration are:
Personal illness (if over three days, the school shall require a note from the doctor)
Personal court appearance (student)
Death in the family (mother, father, spouse, son, daughter, sister, brother, grandparent, aunt, uncle, nephew or niece)
Religious holidays regularly observed by the student
Extenuating circumstances as approved by the school administration
CELL PHONE PROCEDURES FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR
Scholars are asked to voluntarily accept the #distractionfreechallenge and turn in cell phones to a secured cell phone bin in each class. Scholars are rewarded for their participation and receive cell phones back at the end of each class. The RPS cell phone policy is referenced in the student and caregiver handbook and Student Code of Responsible Ethics. #offandaway #Tigersdistractionfree
