Principal's Message
Families,
It is hard to believe the first month of school has already passed us by. I’d like to thank you again for taking the time to help your child get off to a great start this school year. Building solid routines and expectations at home helps reinforce the work that is done daily at school. One way we build those routines and expectations here at school is with PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). PBIS, perhaps you have heard your child refer to it as "The Wildcat Way," is a positive behavior support system designed to help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The Wildcat Way sets clear expectations and creates a positive atmosphere for learning. We have spent much of the first month building routines and modeling our all-school expectations, In all things be: Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. Last Friday, we celebrated all of that hard work with some dancing (Jump Around) right after the morning announcements.
One of the most fundamental parts of learning is being healthy and in school. Getting regular sleep, eating healthy, and washing hands are great habits to build. Also, be sure to talk daily with your son or daughter about their day as it sends an important message – school is important. The way you ask questions matters. Ask open-end questions instead of questions that can be answered with a yes or no. For example try:
- I saw on Seesaw today that (fill in the blank)...tell me about it.
- What was the best thing you did at school?
- What was the most interesting thing your teacher said today?
- How did you use your pencil today?
- What was the best question that was asked today?
While in classrooms during the first month of the year I have seen many great activities. I have seen our 4k students cooking with apples, 5K students enjoying recess, 1st graders making a reading plan, 2nd graders working on troublemaker words, 3rd graders doing their daily Number Corner math work, and 4th graders working with their Chromebooks. I hope you have had the chance to connect to the classroom via Seesaw to see for yourself what has been going on.
Finally, this week is Homecoming. No community does Homecoming as well as Oconomowoc. Spirit days, the parade, and football help bring our K-12 community together. While our student council will organize our float and walk in the parade, all families are welcome to join us. We do ask that a grown-up walk along with their student. Just find us on Oakwood between 4:30-5:00. Or if you plan to watch the parade as a family, be sure to give us a shout-out as we go by.
Paws Up!
Mr. Schreiber
