From the Principal's Desk
Dear Glen Grove Families,
March has been quite the busy month around Glen Grove! We just completed a successful round of parent-teacher conferences. The near 100% parent participation rate of our families in this process speaks to the strong home-school partnership we have come to count on and value!
April is around the corner and will be bringing one of the most important responsibilities in which we engage, assigning students to classes for next school year. Please look for the detailed information about our student placement process that will come home for our Westbrook second and Glen Grove third graders on April 12.
April will also bring our school the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR, formerly known as PARCC), the official standardized assessment of the state of Illinois. IAR results will be used by the State and our District to gauge student learning against the curriculum. Please look at the first section of this newsletter for our exact testing dates and remember, as always, we want to work together in encouraging our students to do their best work without causing them undo test-taking anxiety or stress in the process. During this important testing period, you can support your child by doing the following:
- If your child does not eat breakfast at school, provide a nutritional breakfast at home.
- Ensure a good night’s sleep.
- Please make sure students are on time every day this week, and…
- Please make sure your child is in school every day this week. Avoid scheduling elective doctor, dentist or other appointments that can be scheduled at a different time. If your child misses school or is late for a test, he/she will have to make up the test the following week in an alternate testing area with a different teacher. Taking the test with peers, in the classroom environment in which they are familiar, with their own teacher who they know and with whom they are comfortable will increase students’ chances of doing their best work.
As you know, school will not be in attendance March 25 - 29, so may your spring break be safe and filled with joyful moments!!!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena

Author Visits Coming Soon
I am happy to share that Glen Grove has a few visits planned this spring, some in person and some online.
At the beginning of the month, fifth grade will be Skyping with non-fiction author Sarah Albee. She is the writer of a number of books including Dog Days of History and Poop Happened! The students are brainstorming a list of questions to ask her and can’t wait to hear the answers.
Next, third grade will be Skyping with author/illustrator Deborah Freedman on Earth Day. They will be learning about her newest book, Carl and The Meaning of Life. The main character is a Earthworm. Carl questions why he is on Earth and begins to discover everyone, no matter how small, makes a big difference just by being themselves. It is the perfect tie into the previous science unit.
Then on April 26, Lowey Bundy Sichol will be visiting the fourth graders to talk about her new series, From an Idea to… It is the world’s first business biographies for young people. A big thank you goes to the Book Stall for bringing the author to Glen Grove and the PTA for providing a copy of both of her 2 titles for each of the fourth grade classrooms as well as the school library. If your fourth grader is interested in purchasing a signed book personalized to him/her, please look for the order form included in this newsletter.
Finally, fourth and fifth grades will host author of Resistance, Jennifer Nielsen on May 14 thanks to Scholastic. Look for more details to follow in the coming months.
All For Books
With the spring book fair just around the corner at the end of April, the Library Council has decided to support Scholastic’s All for Books campaign. Students will be asked to send in change to support children in need of books. Scholastic Book Fairs will then match those monetary donations and distribute books to children through organizations such as the Kids In Need Foundation, Reader to Reader, Inc., and the National Center for Families Learning. The Library Council is excited to “Make Change” in the world by helping others in need. Please help support this worthy cause and send in some change.

Fifth Grade Musical Information
The fifth grade musical this year is “The Trial of the Big, Bad Wolf”. The shows music and style is set in the “rock and roll” 50’s. It presents a comical version of what might happen had the Big, Bad Wolf been on trial for his offenses. This light-hearted musical is full of fun and laughs for the whole family.
The show is Wednesday, April 10, 2019 for Cast A at 8:30am for the school and 7:00pm for parents and relatives. Cast A classes are Mr. Nitz, Mrs. Poulakas, Ms. Fried, and Mrs. Richardson.
Cast B will perform on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 8:30am for the school and 7:00pm for parents and relatives. Cast B classes are Mr. Roy, Ms. Margolis, and Mrs. Champney.
The last few weeks have been very exciting in drama class! Students made up commercials of products of the 1950’s that would be used by our characters. A few of these commercials have been picked to be part of our 5th grade musical.
In the weeks to follow we will be practicing our lines, learning songs, making scenery and getting our costumes together. (More to follow on costumes) Students should be memorizing their lines and practicing at home as well as in class. Thank you in advance for your support with that.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns:
eberichon@glenview34.org or (847) 657-2335.
Sincerely,
Eileen Berichon, Drama Director
ATTENTION 5TH GRADE FAMILIES
Please remember that all incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 21, 2019. Your child will NOT be able to start school until the physical form is turned in. If your child’s health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child’s middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847)657-2394.
