EL K-8 Overview Curriculum
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcGyt6n4pmc
How is the curriculum structured?
Our K-5 curriculum offers either two or three hours of literacy instruction per day, depending on the grade level. The Grades K-2 curriculum offers two hours per day of content-based literacy (module lessons and K-2 Labs) plus one hour of structured phonics (K-2 Reading Foundations Skills Block). All together, these three hours of curriculum are considered comprehensive, meaning that they explicitly teach and formally assess all strands and standards of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) standards for each grade level.
The Grades 3-5 curriculum offers two hours of content-based literacy instruction per day (module lessons and the Additional Language and Literacy [ALL] Block), with an additional optional companion Life Science Module, which accompanies Module 2 for a third hour of instruction lasting eight to nine weeks. With or without the Life Science module, the two hours of content-based literacy are considered comprehensive.
At the heart of the curriculum, at all grade levels, are the hour-long module lessons. Each grade level includes four modules, which span a full school year. The four modules allow students to build important content knowledge based on a compelling topic related to science, social studies, or literature. Each module uses rich, authentic text throughout.

RICAS Released Items Prep/Practice Gr. 3-5
Expectations: The goal is to work through the review during the 8+ weeks leading up to the assessment in April and to do practice problems 3x/week for both ELA and Math. It is our hope that you will not need to spend more than 10-15 minutes for each subject daily and some may take multiple days to complete. The practice problems should be spaced out over 8 weeks; it is NOT advisable to do all the questions in the last few weeks before RICAS. This is not to be given as homework.
How: There are a few options on how to do practice items
Teachers can project the questions and passages on the board and do a demonstration of how to solve the problems and answer questions together. Teachers should model strategies and think through the problem/solution with the students.
Teachers can work with students in small groups, especially with students who need additional explanation and an opportunity to ask clarifying questions.
Students can work on problems independently and the teacher can then solve the problem, allowing students to observe solution strategies and the correct responses.
Students can be invited to share their strategies with the class, in small groups or with partners.
Essay questions may be spread over a number of test prep sessions.

February 15, 2020: From Practical Ed Tip of the Week - some of you may find this useful and interesting:
Hi Dom Giusti,
Last week I showed a group of teachers how to use the MIT App Inventor. One asked me if it could be used to create a memory game. It certainly could be used to make a memory game. In fact, I have a student who is working on doing that right now. It's a great exercise through which she's learning about all of the variables and parts of the app that need to be designed.
If you're a little more pressed for time than my student is and you just want to quickly generate some matching games or sorting games for your students to play, there are easier methods than programming your own app.
Educandy is a game builder that I reviewed last fall. Since then a couple of more game templates have been added. One of those is a matching or memory game template. To use the template you simply provide a list of words or terms and Educandy does the rest. Your game will be assigned its own URL that you can distribute to your students.
Vortex by ClassTools lets you create an online sorting activity that has up to four categories. You specify the categories and the vocabulary terms that players have to sort. Your game is assigned its own unique URL. Give that URL to students to play your game.
Matching Game is one of the many Google Sheets templates that Flippityoffers. Like all Flippity templates you can make a copy of the template, modify it by adding your own words or terms, and then clicking the activity URL provided by Flippity. Try a sample Flippity Matching Game here and get the template here. Flippity also offers a new template called Manipulatives. The Manipulatives template lets you create an online sorting activity from information that you enter into a Google Sheet.
