Cedar Grove Friday Flash
March 19, 2021
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Last Monday, we were very happy to welcome some of our kindergarten through third grade students back to school and into their classrooms. The children are quickly learning all of the safety routines and protocols, and they had a wonderful start in getting adjusted to being back in the building. For our in-person students, we want to share the following reminders to parents:
- Please send safe/plastic utensils and napkins for students who bring a lunch.
- Also, if you have not done so, please send a baggie of play items for your child to enjoy when there is indoor recess.
- As a reminder, we do not serve snack and supper on Fridays, but your child may order breakfast and lunch for Saturday and Sunday.
- Next week is B week for third grade students.
The ACCESS assessment for English Language Learners is generally administered during the second semester of each school year. This year, MCPS has decided not to administer this assessment to in-person and virtual, ESOL students. This assessment will take place in January/February of 2022.
We are still looking to fill a two hour lunch/recess aide position. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Penny German at 240-740-6190.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German

March Book Madness 2021!
We have our third ballot out until Sunday, March 21, for the next round of student votes. This ballot will have the titles that are left after the first two elimination rounds. Students can access the ballot through the Media Events Calendar on the homepage or through the Media Center Tile on MyMCPS Classroom. On Monday, March 22, we'll have our fourth ballot available for the last vote before the championship game. Please encourage your students to vote for their favorite titles so we can keep narrowing down our choices to the Championship Game! Feel free to email Mrs. Hirschhorn if you have any questions!
Holds to Go at Cedar Grove ES - Important Update - Please read!
Our Holds to Go program is suspended until after Spring Break. At that time, both our in-building and at-home students will be able to put three books on hold and check out three books at a time, provided their Destiny Media Account is clear. Please review this video, which may help students find their way to their accounts and show them how to put books on hold and stay tuned for more detailed information regarding hold deliveries and pickups after spring break.
Update on Mathematics Courses
MCPS recognizes the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many students’ learning in mathematics over the course of the 2020 and 2021 school years. As a result, adjustments to existing courses and alternative recommendations for course pathways are currently being discussed. While no decisions have been made for the 2021-2022 school year, MCPS continues to engage in discussions and will meet with school principals, teachers and the community to receive feedback and make needed adjustments.
A final decision about the district mathematics course offerings will be made in April. As a result, mathematics course offerings and student recommendations for the 2021-2022 school year may change in the coming weeks and months based on student data and anticipated readiness. Addressing the needs of all students continues to be the top priority for the district.
