Positivity Project: Humor
This week our students be learning about the character strength of humor. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing at the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. Our Cheetahs are learning so much through their P2 Lessons each day, be sure to ask your students about their favorite character strength!
“I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills.”

Safety Guidelines Published by WCPSS Regarding Carpool Safety
Single Subject Acceleration Request Window
Students meeting qualifying criteria in grades K‐7 can take advanced academic content in mathematics or English Language Arts through Single Subject Acceleration (SSA). This ensures opportunities for appropriate levels of academic challenge. Only students who are currently enrolled and attending a WCPSS school during the open nomination and testing window are eligible to be considered for SSA.
Does My Child Qualify?
SSA allows students to show mastery of content in select elementary or middle school courses. Students who prove mastery do not have to take the course and may move on to the next level.
Parents or guardians may nominate their child to skip a grade level of content in either English Language Arts or mathematics.
Students will be assessed at their school based upon grade level. Depending on grade level and subject, this could include a multiple-choice test and/or a writing sample. Your school will have more specific information about this process once your child is nominated.
Assessment Requests, Testing Windows
You must submit an SSA assessment request form to your school during its specific calendar deadlines.
Deadlines for requesting an assessment for the 2020-21 school year are as follows:
Track 1: Feb 24-28
Tracks 2-4: Mar 23-27
Germ Season Reminders
Help protect your children -- and their classmates -- when they're under the weather, so that they can return to the classroom healthy and ready to learn.
When your child is sick
The best thing you can do is to keep your children home when sick. This will help stop the spread of illness to other children and teachers. Keep them home when they show any of these symptoms:
o fever of 100 degrees F or higher
o nausea or vomiting
o severe headache
o diarrhea
o red, watery eyes with yellow drainage
o undiagnosed rash
Children should stay home until they have been naturally without fever for at least 24 hours.
Please do not give children fever-reducing medication and then send them to school.
If you are called to pick up a sick child at school, please come quickly. If you know your child has been exposed to someone diagnosed with the flu virus, call your doctor immediately to find out what to do.
State law (Garrett's Law) requires us to provide you with information about meningococcal meningitis, influenza (flu), and human papillomavirus (HPV) and the vaccines that protect against these diseases.

Kids Heart Challenge is a service-learning program that will teach your child the importance of heart-healthy habits, share inspirational stories of children who have been touched by heart disease and help raise life saving funds for the American Heart Association.
Donations for our challenge can be made online! Sign up at http://www2.heart.org/goto/hollyspringselem or download the free mobile app "Kids Heart Challenge" in your phones mobile app store!
