Greetings Explorer Families!

So much has happened since my last note!

We participated in Read Across America Week, the PTA hosted an amazing International Night, Kindergarten registration begun, the weather is turning nicer, and lots of learning is happening here at school! We are also in the middle of the Read-A-Thon, and have raised over $17,000 dollars!

We are celebrating our amazing Classified Staff this week! Supervision staff, paraeducators, secretaries, custodians, food service, and bus drivers all make our world go 'round! Our theme this week is "This place would be a circus without you!"

A quick safety note: parent drop-off and pick-up areas are designated for a reason. They are the places we have the most adults to supervise children, and are the safest. Please do not drop off and pick up your student anywhere but these locations unless you plan on parking and walking your student to the front door. Also, please leave all the playground equipment clear until all students have been picked up. Parents picking up students should be under the covered area.

We will be celebrating the February students of the month soon! In March we are focusing on empathy, and April we will be focusing on courage.

The end of second Trimester is March 17. It's hard to believe we are already 2/3 of the way done with the year!

We have spring conferences coming up at the end of the month. Wednesday, March 22 will be a half day for elementary students. They will be released at 12:10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, the 23 & 24, will be non school days. You can schedule your conference here.

Spring break will be April 3-7.

Looking ahead, we know Field Day will be coming up, and this event requires MANY volunteers! If you think you might be interested, please fill out a volunteer packet now. These packets are available in the office.

Head Lice and Schools

Unfortunately, head lice in school-aged children are a common occurrence in schools throughout the country. Our school district is no exception. There are some simple steps that you can take at home to drastically reduce the number of cases seen in our district each year. Control of head lice depends on prompt identification and treatment. Your help in spending 5-15 minutes inspecting your child weekly throughout the school year for the presence of head lice would make a huge difference.

The following procedure is recommended for inspecting your child for head lice:

• Under a bright light begin looking at your child’s head beginning with the area just above the back of the neck.

• Part the hair into small sections and look closely for head lice or nits (eggs). Head lice are about the size of a sesame seed. Nits are gray or whitish and attached firmly to the hair shaft near the scalp.

• If you find live lice on your child’s head, start treatment as soon as possible. Your local pharmacist or family physician can recommend appropriate treatment options.

• Notify the office staff at your child’s school. Your child can return to school the day after treatment.

• Inspect the entire family for head lice if lice are found on any family members.
