Dave Spang SD308 Employee of the Month for February
You may not know Mr. Dave, but if your child has ever had a locker jam, they know him. Mr. Dave Spang has been the Building Engineer at Murphy since we opened in 2012. He does so much for the staff and students at Murphy. He works diligently to ensure that the building is maintained so that kids can learn. He takes so much pride in our building and it shows. We know we have the best building engineer in the district. It was great that the district chose to recognize him as Employee of the Month.
Thank you, Dave for all you do. This is an honor well-deserved.

SIP Days at Murphy
During our most recent SIP Day we had 9 parent volunteers share with our students about their educational paths and careers. This is connected with 2 of our broad school improvement goals, 1) developing student understanding of career pathways; and 2) creating stronger connections with our school community. In addition to our career focus, we do team building activities in our Advisory classes, we develop stronger interpersonal relationships with each other, problem solve and much more. In my Advisory we "played" Dice to Meet you where students sit in groups, roll a die and answer a question associated with the number on the die. Some questions are fun, "What would you do if you were given $1 million?" Others ask students to reflect, "What is a piece of advice you would give your 6th grade self?" (My Advisory is 8th grade students.) Other Advisory classes did other activities. At the end of our rotations the whole school comes together for an all-school assembly where we recognize the achievements of our students over the previous 9 weeks.
It is an exhausting 3.5 hours of school. But it's engaging. It's fun. It helps build connections among kids, between staff and students.

AVID Things @ Murphy
Mr. Zaininger - Science
Mr. Zaininger's 8th grade honors science students did a wonderful job with science fair this year! Students designed their own experiments and/or conducted their own research when completing their science fair projects. They then shared their findings with their peers and community at the 2019 Murphy Science Fair.

The students wrote down definitions of math vocabulary on a graphic organizer. On the graphic organizer they had to rewrite the definitions in their own words. Finally they had group discussions about applying their knowledge to a visual example at the bottom of the paper.
