Collaborative Technology Rocks by Linda Kozden
Tuesday, January 29, 2019, was a big day…...for me, my Computer Aided Electronics classes, and Kelvin Doe. Kelvin Doe?? Who’s Kelvin Doe?
So glad you asked. Please watch this YouTube video (Skip Ad):
Kelvin Doe, the youngest self-taught engineer in the world.
My Computer Aided Electronics (CAE) students watched this video with
Ed Puzzle embedded questions for our Engineering Design Process unit.
They enjoyed this video and said “Yes” when I asked if they would like to
meet Kelvin Doe through Google Hangouts. I began my search and found him on LinkedIn. For the whole month of December I did not hear from him, because both of us had been ill. When I did hear from him, I tried not to act like a silly child, but I was excited. I discovered that he was now living in Canada and he was also interested in mentoring young people and was willing to speak with my Period 2 and Period 8 CAE classes.
To prepare, I had the students write 2 questions for Kelvin. Here are some examples:
How did you know that you were able to make a circuit out of scrap?
Anita J.
Did kids make fun of you when you were making your inventions?
Lizbeth O.
What engineering skills do you need to improve on/or get better at?
Alan S.
What is the hardest part of doing what you do?
Juan T.
This event had a Standard attached to it:
NT-ISTE Standards
{Tech K-12.7.b} use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community members, to examine issues and
problems from multiple viewpoints.
I had been thinking of a meeting like this for quite a while and was delighted when I easily came across this standard thanks to OnCourse’s standard library in our lesson planner. I knew this event was going to happen. And it did.
Our time together was way too short, but there were a few take-aways.
Firstly, now that this experience has taken place, the next one will be easier. It may be with Bill Gates….who knows?
The students have stepped into a new normal. They now realize
that it is possible to have a face-to-face conversation with any willing participant in the world.
Lastly, Kelvin Doe has asked me to help him with his movement.
He enjoyed the young people of New Brunswick so much that he told me he was inspired.
So there it is. Prepared, empowered, and inspired learning. I am feeling that this will be the beginning of greatness for some of these students because of collaborative technology. It’s that good.
