The Value of Mentoring in SHISD
I just wanted to share a short video with you and tell you the incredible value of mentoring. On Wednesdays, Melissa Haney's Leadership classes went to the primary to partner with teachers and help them with whatever they needed help with. This video may bring tears to your eyes. You are going to see a boy that came a few months ago from a school where he had to be tough to fit in and be accepted, and at first he gave his teachers a run for their money. Then...he started mentoring...and things changed. Whenever he is paired with a younger student, all that tough guy stuff just melts off and he becomes this sweet, compassionate and nurturing young man. The classes put on a field day for the special needs kids at the intermediate which required students to first meet these kids and then develop games they could play. He was ALL OVER this!! It's amazing what happens to kids when their eyes are off themselves.
The video attached was taken as Mrs. Haney was walking down the hall checking in on students in their assigned classrooms. As she walked down the hall, she heard his voice and started recording.

The ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series
The ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series is a CD recording audition process designed to select the most outstanding Class 1C, 2C, 1A/2A, 3A, and 4A concert band programs in the state of Texas each year. The Spring Hill Junior High 8th grade band recently received 1st place in the "March" category at the region level of the Outstanding Performance Series Competition. They also received 1st and 2nd place in the "Concert" category. This means ALL of our recordings from UIL Concert Contest will advance to the Area level of this competition.
I am so proud of the students hard work, I had to share!! --Jacob Pipak

White Oak Principal Retiring
Many of you have known Dan Noll for a long time. I wanted to make sure you know he is finishing his last year as principal of White Oak High School. His last day will be at the end of June. He has dedicated 42 years to education, 27 years at White Oak ISD where he spent 21 years as principal of the high school. Dan has been a positive influence on students, faculty, staff and the community of White Oak for all those years.
Dan was diagnosed with cancer and his cancer treatments are going very well. He is set to have a bone marrow transplant very soon. This will be using his on bone marrow and the intent is to strengthen the bones in his legs. He is strong in his faith and fully supported by family and friends here and across the state.
If you know Dan and happen to see him, be sure to express your appreciation for his service to all of us in the Texas Public School System.
Parents Sue to Stop TEA from Counting 2015-16 STAAR Scores
The Austin American-Statesman reported that a group of parents is suing TEA to bar the state from including the results of this year’s third through eighth grade assessments in the public school accountability system. “According to a lawsuit against the Texas Education Agency and its commissioner Mike Morath, four parents claim the elementary and middle school State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, was illegal this year. They allege in the lawsuit filed in Travis County that the state failed to shorten the tests in accordance with House Bill 743, which passed in 2015.” The group appears to be the same one that launched a gofundme campaign called “Stop the 2016 STAAR Results,” which has raised more than $20,000 to date to fund such a lawsuit.
