Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a busy week! Concert has taken over the world and the children and teachers are busy busy busy getting ready!! We had our dress rehearsal on Monday and practice run throughs all day Tuesday ready for last night’s performance! The children were just wonderful and I am sure our final performance this evening will be the best yet!
A huge thank you to Michelle Smith who wrote the production, and to Jackie Knight who worked tirelessly with the children to learn their songs and dances. The ticketing and seating was organised by Jo Ravida and the programme by Steph Ravida – a huge thanks!! Many members of the community and staff have been helping to get the stage ready, lighting and sound organised and contributed with costumes, etc. – again thank you! The concert is indeed a whole school event to be proud of!
Here are some pictures from our dress rehearsal:
FOOTY COLOURS DAY:
Next week is our annual Footy Colours Day!! The children all come to school dressed in their team colours and throughout the day there will be a series of activities – football related! The day ends with our Parade in the hall at 2pm. Please do come along and join us for the parade. You will also need to be donning your colours!!
PLAY SURVEY:
Judy McKinty has been working throughout the school playground over the last week or so looking at and surveying the children on their play. She is working to develop some recommendations for us to use as we plan our new play spaces. You can learn more about Judy’s work at her website:

CAFÉ READING:
Use prior knowledge and context to predict and confirm meaning.
Occasionally readers come to words that are unfamiliar and therefore difficult to understand. When this happens, readers can use context clues to help gain understanding. Context clues are the words, phrases, and sentences surrounding an unfamiliar word that give clues or hints to its meaning. Although not all words can be figured out this way, it is important for readers to know this strategy as one way to gain meaning from a word. This strategy may take a while for a reader to become comfortable using, but with practice it will help expand vocabulary and enhance understanding.
How can you help your child with this strategy at home?
1. Encourage your child to look for clue words to help figure out the meaning of a word. These words include: but, however, unlike, means, in other words, also known as, etc. Remind your child that punctuation may also provide clues to the meaning of a word.
2. Your child was taught different context clues, what they mean, and how to use them with the steps below. Review these steps with your child and model them when reading with your child so they become familiar:
Check for a context clue that is in the sentence;
After finding a context clue, reread the sentence with the new term or clue in mind;
Think about what the sentence says using this context clue;
If you don’t find a clue or understand the main point the author is making, try a different strategy to figure out the word, such as asking someone the meaning or using a dictionary.
3. Remind your child to self-monitor as they are reading. Good readers should check themselves to see if what they are inferring looks right, sounds right, and makes sense.
4. Write a sentence, leaving one word out. Have your child read the sentence and use context clues to guess what word is missing. They enjoy trying to figure it out and it is a great way to practice using context clues.
I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend after a busy week!

Basketball Round Robin
Excitement filled Nunawading Stadium as students from twelve schools across our district competed in the Syndal District Annual Basketball Round Robin on Friday 7 September.
Sixteen Parkhill students from Y5 and Y6 represented our school with pride and outstanding sportsmanship as we played our way through five nail biting games. A special congratulations to Alex B and Nika R who were nominated best on court at the conclusion of the day.
The final results saw the boys team win four of their five games, while the girls won 3 and drew 1. Thanks to the many parents that assisted with travel on the day and supported us with their cheering courtside. Special thanks to Georgina Gaff for her time and commitment to coaching the girls in preparation for the tournament.

Forms have gone home for our end of term Special Lunch. To keep with our ‘Footy Colours’ dress up theme this year we are providing BBQ sausages in bread, cookies and juice.

Parkhill Fun Run – Thursday 1 November
Stay tuned for the details of this exciting event. Official launch is during assembly on Friday 14th September.
This year, instead of the walk-a-thon, we will be holding a School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event. Thursday 1 November is the date you won’t want to miss! The theme for the event will be a colour run. You guessed it - the children will be showered in colour at the end of the run (that’s what the white t-shirts are for). We are hoping to raise much needed funds for new playground equipment to compliment the rebuild.
How Does My Child Fundraise?
Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Once you have completed this, read through your Sponsorship Form, which has instructions on how to raise money and order prizes.
Students who raise just $10 will receive a prize for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form!
Getting Involved
Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please look for sign up details in the PFA Newsletter. We can’t wait to see you at our event!
