FINAL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CHAIR MEETING OF THE YEAR-WEDNESEDAY, MAY 6TH AT 2PM VIA WEBEX
TEACHERS AND STUDENTS CAN Register for the 100-word Microfiction Challenge from NYC Midnight by May 7th
The 100-word Microfiction Challenge is a competition that challenges writers around the world to create very short stories (100 words max.) based on genre, action, and word assignments in 24 hours. In the 1st Round, kicking off May 8th, writers are placed randomly in heats and are assigned a genre, action, and word assignment. Writers have 24 hours to craft an original 100-word story (maximum) in their assigned genre, with the assigned action taking place, and incorporating the assigned word. The judges choose a top 20 in each heat to advance to the 2nd Round (June 26-27, 2020) where writers receive new assignments and again have 24 hours to craft original stories. Judges select the top 10 writers in each heat from the 2nd Round to advance to the Final Round of the competition taking place July 24-25, 2020 where writers will receive their final assignment of the competition. Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission and there are thousands in cash and prizes for the winners. In addition, NYC Midnight will be donating two dollars from each entry to global charities currently dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

END-OF-YEAR ITEMS
If you want to save any of the older curriculum items aligned to the Pearson adoption from 2009, download and save those this month from the ELA 6-12 Webpage. These will be taken down and replaced this summer. You can find them at your respective grade level quick links: Curriculum/Instructional Resources 6-8 or Curriculum/Instructional Resources 9-12. They are labeled "OLDER COMMON CORE CURRICULUM GUIDES" in each of the grade level sections.
2. END OF YEAR WRITING PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
Although optional due to remote learning, you may want to still have your students reflect on their writings from this school year using the Writing Portfolio Student Reflection which asks students to reflect on four of their writings from this school year and themselves as writers. The writings they choose to reflect upon may be in their digital writing portfolios (Google Folder on their Drive) or be any written piece this year from any class. Here is the
Writing Portfolio Student Reflection as a sharable Google Doc. (Reminder: teachers and students need to make a copy of the Google Doc before filling it out digitally and should not send a request to access the original.)
3. BORROWED NOVELS FROM SECONDARY CURRICULUM (SOUTHLAND CENTER)
Please box up any novels you have borrowed from Secondary Curriculum for returns when we get back into the buildings.
