DIY Wooden Smartphone Speaker
step by step
Finished Product
This is the finished product on the whole. This is a base model, with little alteration from the original plan, with the exception of wood burn and stain as a finish.
Speaker Layout
Speaker Assembly
Templates
Step 1
The first step is to choose a board and measure out 3'. We were making three speakers, so we used 1.5' more, but 3' covers the templates for two speakers.
Step 2
When you measure out the 3', you will square the wood, with a ruler so you know where to cut. The square is a great tool to make sure that the line in straight.
Step 3
After you square, you can now cut the wood with the handsaw. Using clamps, you should first secure the board, and then use deep strokes at a 45 degree measure to cut.
Step 4
The next thing to do is to cut out the templates so we can transfer the drawing to the wood. If you wish, you can first glue the templates to thicker construction paper, or something of the same materials, so that it is easier to trace onto the board.
Step 5
After you cut out the templates, there are two ways to trace them onto the wood. One is to just trace them on with pencil.
Step 5 Pt2
The other way is to make a second set of templates, and use one to refer back to and the other you can glue onto the wood itself. Doing this you can peel away the templates after you've got everything cut out.
Step 6
The good thing is that this project does not require screws, so we don't need to use the scratch awl. You can go ahead and cut out the basic outline of the pieces on the bandsaw. It is good to get as close as the template or pencil markings as possible.
Step 6
After you've cut out all 4 pieces, as closely as possible, you can finish up the line, and get it perfectly straight on the belt sander. This is only used to get edges straighter, and the actual hand sanding will be done at the end.
Step 7
The next step is to drill the holes for the speaker. There will be three holes, all of different sizes (1 1/4, 1 5/8, 2). To do this you will clam are scrap piece of wood onto the table with the piece of wood that is being drilled. You will line the drill up with the markings or template.
Step 8
The next step is to cut out the place to put your phone on the speaker. Again, you can go to the belt sander and then cut as closely as possible. Fine sanding will be done at the end.
Step 9
The piece of wood that you just used for the phone holder, will also need to be drilled so that the music can reach the speaker part. You need to tilt the wood and wait until the template is lined up a straight edge, like the square.
Step 10
After you've found the right measure to drill the holes into the wood, you will clamp the wood onto the drill press and drill. Be sure to make sure that the drill bit reaches all the way into inside of the speaker.
Step 11
After you've drilled the small holes for the speaker, you can lightly hand sand the wood to get rid of the templates or pencil markings. After that, you can glue together the four pieces of wood.
Step 12
After glueing, you can clamp the pieces together to make sure that the glue holds.
Step 13
After the glue dries, you can advance to sand all of the faces. You should make sure that all of the pieced are even, as well as get the large holes for the speaker. Make sure to move your way down from the larger grits to the smaller, finer, grits.
Step 14
After you are all done with sanding, you can start to finish and make the exterior of your project. Choices include wood burning, torching, as well as waxing and staining at the very end. This is a base model project that had been torched and is being stained.
