Introduction to and Applied Writing With Technology (Parts 1 & 2)
With the upcoming Writing Assessments, I thought this month might be a great time to focus on preparing our students for the assessment. Although this might not be "counted" yet, if we don't start focusing on writing strategies now, we will not be prepared as teachers when it really DOES count!
This is really 2 one-hour sessions. The first hour is spent looking at various websites and tools to use in teaching writing and is required in order to attend Part 2, which is when you will have the opportunity to set up a writing assignment in one of the tools we looked at in the first hour so that you can go back in the classroom knowing you are ready to tackle a productive practice writing session with your students! I have uploaded students to the MIST site and there are already practice tests that you can assign to them, but you may also want to pull some writing videos from Compass Odyssey to watch as a whole group with your students to enhance the writing process.
Part I: Introduction to Writing with Technology
Descriptor: Looking for ways to improve writing assessment scores, but you don't know how? Are you comfortable with teaching writing but need some new resources? Do you want to make sure that your students are successful with writing online by providing good oral and written feedback? If so, come to the Writing with Technology in-service. This session will provide you with ideas and resources to help prepare students for writing online across the curriculum.
Sample Programs Include: Word Pad, Note Pad, Edmodo, Moodle, Student Turn-in folder, Odyssey Writer, MIST, etc.
This session is appropriate for middle and secondary to prepare for the on-line writing assessment in February. This session is a pre-requisite to the optional hour extension Applied Writing with Technology (Part 2--see below).
Length of 1st session: 1 hour

Part II: Applied Writing with Technology
Descriptor: Examine writing resources from Part 1 further and apply them to your classroom. Add students, setup your classroom, make assignments, create an activity or lesson plan, create/upload a writing prompt, or create a grading rubric with some of your favorites in part one. This hands on part 2 workshop allows teachers to dig deeper int a resource learned during part 1-Word Pad, Note Pad, Edmodo, Moodle, Student Turn-in folder, Odyssey Writer, MIST, etc.
This session is appropriate for middle and secondary to aid in preparing for on-line writing assessment in February.
Length of session: 1 hour
