Chartwell School Weekly News and Highlights
May 23, 2019
Today we distributed yearbooks to all of our students. Each yearbook is labeled with a student's name. We encourage students to bring their yearbooks to school in order to get signatures from peers and teachers. Many thanks to Mr. Higashi and his dedicated yearbook team for assembling such a beautiful and thorough yearbook to commemorate our 2018-2019 school year!

Great America
Our 8th graders had the time of their lives braving rollercoasters and simple bonding with friends at Great America this past Friday. Now they're ready to finish out middle school strong!
Maker Faire 2019
Maker Faire is a popular celebration of tinkerers, inventors, and the maker movement that parallels many of the hands-on and innovative learning in our Chartwell STEAM program. 6th and 7th-grade students and teachers had a blast! #
Roman Times
In Mrs. Kirshner's art class, Mr. Whitman's 6th Grade learned about Roman mosaics and then created their own mosaics using virtually the same process.
Multicultural Breakfast
Mrs. Purganan's Humanities class is studying Reconstruction. They closed the unit by preparing and displaying food from many of the home countries of immigrants to the United States. Students and faculty enjoyed the buffet Thursday morning.
High School Updates
Tomorrow (Friday, May 24) is a Community-Building Work Day
Students will resume their community building work tomorrow (at the VTC, First Tee, or Chartwell). Students should dress for hard work and bring a water bottle. Groups working outdoors should consider a hat as well. If it rains, we have indoor work for them to do. Below are pictures of the Chartwell group; they created a lovely butterfly garden behind building 200 last week.
Wednesday (5/29): Lunch & Bowling
As a fun end-of-year activity, the students voted between kayaking, bowling, or a potluck. Bowling was the clear winner. Next Wednesday (5/29), we will go bowling at Monterey Lanes in Seaside in the afternoon. Students will miss their period 5 block. We will have a fajita lunch and we should have time to bowl two rounds. Students who intend to drive themselves should let Ms. LeValley know. We will be back on campus by 3:00 PM for regular pick-up time.
Thursday (3/30): College Planning Appointments for Juniors
Next Thursday our Independent Education Consultant, Duffy Grant, will be on campus to meet with juniors. Meetings will include Ms. LeValley and will cover a range of topics, including a review of how to use our college planning software (CollegePlannerPro) and several forms of self-assessment as we work to help students carefully consider their plans and hopes for life after high school.
Last Week of School: June 3rd - 7th
Our last week of school features half-days because of conferences. Students have classes in the mornings, but we will build in time for Retrospective Group work as well. Retrospective is when we look back at our work from the year. Working with a small team, students will be responsible for assembling the work from one project period for display. Wednesday, June 5th will be the last day of regular classes. On June 6th, the students will work with their groups on their retrospective display and presentations. On June 7th, students need to wear professional dress for their public presentations of the project periods. Juniors will work as team leaders. The Retrospective work/presentation teams are:

Work Permits & Summer Jobs
If your student is getting a summer job, then they will need a work permit. Work permits require a three-step process and multiple signatures. If your student wants a job but isn't sure where to find one or how to apply, we can help. Please contact Ms. LeValley at alevalley@chartwell.org for help with jobs, resumes, and work permits.
Elective Classes for 2019-2020
All students recently submitted their preferences regarding elective classes for next year. We are planning to offer a range of Spanish classes, Americal Sign Language, Art, Computer Science, and possibly Theatre. We do our best to accommodate student preferences while also ensuring that all students meet graduation requirements and college entrance recommendations.
