Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 1st July 2016
Paralympic Torch
We were given a taste of Rio de Janeiro as the 2016 Paralympic torch passed through school on Wednesday. Ten lucky pupils were chosen as torchbearers, holding the torch aloft as they proudly paraded through school. Prior to the procession, representatives from the torch team led a series of activities linked to the Paralympic values: courage, determination, equality and inspiration.

Year 5 Fiver Challenge
Despite a last minute change of location due to a sudden shower of rain, the Year 5 pupils ran a successful afternoon selling products and crafts at the end of their Enterprise Week. Thank you to everyone who supported them. This week they have been busy counting their takings ready to send off to chosen charities and projects, adding accountancy skills to all those they have learnt during the Challenge! We're hoping to publish a final total of the amount raised next week.

Message from the Cathedral
Last Sunday we celebrated the Festival of St. Peter who with Wilfrid is one of our patron saints. It is also the time of year, Petertide, when priests are ordained and set out on their journey in Ministry. Next Sunday, members of our Church Family will affirm their faith in a service of Confirmation.
We know from the Gospels that Peter was not his birth name. The humble fisherman, Simon, dropped everything to follow a man he hardly knew and who seemed to have very high expectations of him. It is interesting that the man who Jesus christened Peter, meaning rock, the foundation on which He built His church, was to let Him down very badly on several occasions. Peter is firm in his Faith, he totally trusts Jesus, but he is also impetuous. There was the time when Jesus walked on the water and Simon, full of zeal, set out to meet Him. Woops, splash, his Faith failed him and he got very wet! On another occasion Peter was asked by the Roman soldiers if he knew Jesus and Peter pretended he didn’t. How sad for Jesus to be let down by those He loved and how awful for Peter afterwards as it dawned on him what a coward he had been.
Of course Peter went on to be the great leader of the early Church and eventually gave his life for his Lord. It was no easy task taking over as leader and after their Master’s death there must have been arguments, jealousies and in-fighting among the disciples as they set out to found the Christian Church. However, their faith and trust held them together.
It is wonderful for us to know that even one of the greatest Christians had doubts. We are, after all, only human. How wonderful also for us to know that our God always forgives us if we get it wrong and gives us another chance to prove ourselves. Faith and trust are not always easy but we can keep on trying in the hope that we might get it right in the end and that God is always there to help, support and encourage us on our journey.
Our World at the moment, amid the political turmoil, feels a bit “rudderless”, like the early Christians, but God is there to guard, guide and protect us….if we let him!
Heavenly Father,
Help us to follow you in humility. Give us the strength to trust in you and know that you are present in our lives today and always. Guard, guide and strengthen your new priests and bless our Confirmation candidates as they continue their journey in faith.
Amen

Ice Cream
The Friends will be selling ice creams after school today, please bring some pennies -50p per lolly or ice cream. We will text to let you know which day ice creams will be on sale next week. If you are able to help, that would be great, thanks.
Music Evening – We hope everyone enjoyed the cheese and wine in the interval. We also had a raffle for a picnic basket of luxury goodies (donated by Principal Teachers). The evening raised over £100, thank you.
Due to the cancellation of the meeting Monday 27th June, we have rescheduled for Monday 4th July at 7.30pm with everyone welcome to attend. Please contact school for venue details. Now is a good time to come along if you are thinking of getting involved, as we will update our fundraising total for the year, discuss future activities and set a date in September or October for the Annual General Meeting. The AGM is a more formal meeting to decide and vote on committee members. If you are interested in participating in the committee, please let us know before the end of term.
