Library Materials Aids Update
A heads up: the Board of Regents is voting on their 2022 priorities today, and it is expected they will approve an increase in Library Materials Aid as one of them, with a proposed increase from $6.25 to $8.30.
If this happens, the next steps for us would be to advocate with our legislators for the upcoming budget season. Bri, the Director of Government Relations and Advocacy for NYLA, would create a one-pager summary of talking points, etc., for us and other library advocates to use.
The last time materials aid was increased in state law (section 711 of Ed Law) was 2007-08: “For aid payable in the two thousand seven--two thousand
eight school year and thereafter, the library materials factor shall be six dollars and twenty-five cents.” (https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/EDN/711
I’ll share additional info. as I receive it.
Thanks!

Ask The Lawyer about Book Challenges Webinar
Thank you for your interest in the ESLN Webinar: Calm, (Legally) Cool, and Collected: Tactics for Libraries Facing Book Challenges and Collection-based Protests, presented by Stephanie Cole Adams.
Here is a link to the webinar recording. You will find Cole’s slides and a handout attached.
During the presentation, we asked attendees to fill out this Padlet with their challenge experiences and resources. We’ve decided to share this padlet out because the resources and experiences are valuable information that may be of use to someone else.
Important links/information shared in the chat:
- Merritt Fund
- Freedom to Read Foundation
- FOIL/FOIA – refers to Freedom of Information Law (NY) and Freedom of Information Act (federal). It was suggested by someone in the chat to check with your FOIL records officer before answering such requests. Also, here are older RAQs that dealt with FOIL/FOIA.
- It was also suggested to learn where your district policy manual is located online and bookmark it for your patrons.
Both handouts are below.
- Intellectual Freedom Committee – Committee A from AAUP
- NYS CPLR Section 4509 language
