Grades 4-6 reading history
2012-2013
We read a whole bunch of books this year. Below are my reviews of some of the best and some of the worst! Enjoy. :)
September 2012 - December 2012
We started the year by reading three novels out loud. I loved the fairy tale style of The Tale of Despereaux. It also contained some great vocabulary words like eerie, dungeon, and perfidy.
The City of Ember was a great adventure story full of mystery. I enjoyed reading about Lina, Poppy and Doon and it was amazing finding out that the city they called home was actually in a chasm underground.
The Harry Potter series is full of magic, adventure and humour. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is still my favourite book in this series and I especially love reading the Halloween and the Christmas sections, because they are so festive!

January 2013 - May 2013
We kicked off the new year by reading our first novel on our own. The class did an excellent job reading both Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They put in a lot of effort into their comprehension questions and learned a lot as a result. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was definitely more liked, but the first book was pretty funny.
I wanted us to read a brand new novel so we read Lemony Snicket's brand new book Who Could That Be at This Hour? Unfortunately it wasn't as good as I had hoped and I think it was our least favourite novel of the whole year. It was plot-driven, but it contained a lot of running around without meaningful action.

We finished the year by reading one last novel together. Because of Winn-Dixie proved to be my favourite novel of the year! It's a deep, rich story that we all could relate to. It's about friendship, family, loss, and the difficulties of everyday life. It was an excellent way to end our year together on a meaningful, thoughtful note!
