4 Corners
What is it and how to use it in your classroom
How it Works
- Hang 1 poster or sign on each wall in your classroom. The signs should read: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree.
- Provide students with a statement, concept, or topic being studied in class.
- Students should respond to the statement by walking to the poster that best represents their opinion.
- Allow 1-2 minutes for students to discuss in with their groups why they chose to agree/disagree.
One Step Further
Have students form new groups to include one person from each category.
- Be sure to model how to have a discussion that includes different perspectives and opinions. Students need to be able to respect their peer's viewpoint, even if it is different from their own.
Alternative
Use this strategy, but instead of agree/disagree, let your signs be a scale 1 through 4.
- As a pre-assessment to gauge prior knowledge before you introduce new content, place the numbers 1 - 4 on each wall of your classroom.
- Call out a term, or statement that relates to the upcoming topic and have students move to the number that matches how much they know about what you called out (1- I've never heard it before, 2 - I've heard about it but cannot tell you much about it, 3 - I've heard it and can tell you somethings about it, but do not fully understand, 4 - I've mastered that and could teach a peer about it.
